Storyline:

In this crime-action tour de force, the South Boston state police force is waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello. While Billy quickly gains Costello’s confidence, Colin Sullivan, a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the state police as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by their double lives, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations they have penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the mob and the police that there is a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy – and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save themselves. But is either willing to turn on their friends and comrades they’ve made during their long stints undercover?

About Movie:

The Departed is an American epic crime thriller directed by Martin Scorsese and penned by William Monahan. This film serves as a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs and draws inspiration from the real-life Boston Winter Hill Gang. The character Colin Sullivan is modeled after the corrupt FBI agent John Connolly, while Frank Costello is based on notorious Irish-American gangster Whitey Bulger.

The cast features Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg, alongside supporting performances from Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, Alec Baldwin, Anthony Anderson, and James Badge Dale.

In January 2003, Warner Bros., along with producer Brad Grey and actor Brad Pitt, acquired the rights to remake Infernal Affairs for $1.75 million. The project was officially greenlit by Warner Bros.

in early 2005, with filming commencing in the spring. Although many scenes were shot in Boston to capture its authentic atmosphere, several interior shots were filmed in New York City due to tax incentives that Boston lacked at the time.

The Departed achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing approximately $291.5 million against a budget of around $90 million. It garnered praise for its direction, performances—especially those of DiCaprio, Nicholson, and Wahlberg—screenplay, and editing.

The film won four Academy Awards at the 79th Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director for Scorsese (his first Oscar win), Best Adapted Screenplay for Monahan, and Best Film Editing for Thelma Schoonmaker. Additionally, it received six nominations at the 64th Golden Globe Awards (winning one) and six nominations at the 60th British Academy Film Awards.

Although many of the key characters in the film are dead by the end, there was a script written for a sequel. This was ultimately shelved due to the expense and Scorsese’s lack of interest in creating a sequel.
