About Movie:
The Goonies is a 1985 American adventure comedy film directed by Richard Donner and co-produced by Steven Spielberg. Written by Chris Columbus, the story follows a group of kids—played by Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan—who embark on a quest to find a legendary pirate’s treasure in order to save their homes from foreclosure. The film features a supporting cast that includes John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano, and Mary Ellen Trainor.
Principal photography began on October 22, 1984, and lasted five months, with an additional six weeks for dubbing and recording. The original script, over 120 pages long, included sequences that were cut from the final film, such as a scene involving an octopus, referenced in the film’s dénouement. Wes Takahashi of Industrial Light & Magic worked on the film as an animation supervisor, marking his first major motion picture role.
Produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros., The Goonies was released on June 7, 1985. The film was a box office success, grossing $125 million worldwide on a $19 million budget.
While it received positive reviews from critics, it later became a cult classic. In 2017, it was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
