Storyline:

Iris is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. Across the globe, Amanda realizes the man she lives with has been unfaithful. Two women who have never met and live 6000 miles apart, find themselves in the exact same place. They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday. Iris moves into Amanda’s L.A. house in sunny California as Amanda arrives in the snow covered English countryside. Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects: a new romance. Amanda is charmed by Iris’ handsome brother Graham and Iris, with inspiration provided by legendary screenwriter Arthur, mends her heart when she meets film composer Miles.

Production began in Los Angeles before moving to England for a month, and then returning to California to wrap up filming. Principal photography started on January 4, 2006, in Brentwood, Los Angeles, where real Santa Ana winds provided the warm winter setting called for in the script. Filming concluded on June 15, 2006.

The movie premiered in New York City on November 29, 2006, and was released theatrically in both the United States and the United Kingdom on December 8, 2006. Distributed by Columbia Pictures in North America and Universal Pictures internationally, The Holiday grossed over $205 million worldwide on an $85 million budget. Although the film received mixed reviews, critics praised its visual appeal and the cast’s performances, while some found the plot predictable.
