About The Host Movie:
The Host (Korean: 괴물) is a South Korean science fiction horror film directed by Bong Joon-ho, who co-wrote it with Ha Joon-won and Baek Chul-hyun. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Byun Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, Bae Doona, and Go Ah-sung.
This was the third feature-length film directed by Bong Joon-ho after Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) and Memories of Murder (2003).
In 2000, filmmaker Bong Joon-ho conceived the idea of creating a monster movie, drawing inspiration from a widely reported scandal involving an American named Albert McFarland, who ordered his Korean employees to dispose of formaldehyde down a drain, which eventually ended up in the Han River. Additionally, Bong was inspired by a local article about a deformed fish with an S-shaped spine that was caught in the river.
The film was shot on a budget of ₩11.8 billion (US$11 million), with most sequences filmed on location near the Han River. New Zealand company Wētā Workshop modeled the film’s creature and the American studio The Orphanage handled its visual effects.
Most of the underground settings are real locations found underneath the Wonhyo Bridge. The only set built for these underground locations was the creature’s shelter.
The Host premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2006, and was released nationally in South Korea on July 27, 2006. The film became the highest-grossing South Korean film in history upon its release. The film obtained critical acclaim, grossed US$90 million worldwide, and won several awards, including Best Film at the Asian Film Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards.
Heavily promoted and featuring popular actor Song Kang-ho, the film debuted on a record number of screens, breaking South Korean box office records with 2.63 million admissions and $17.2 million in revenue during its opening weekend. By August 6, 2006, it reached six million viewers, and in early September, it became South Korea’s all-time box office leader with over 12.3 million tickets sold in just over a month. The film’s total viewership reached 13,019,740 by November 8.
