About The Lion King Movie:

The Lion King is an American animated adventure drama film directed by Jon Favreau, written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Fairview Entertainment. It is a photorealistic animated remake of the 1994 traditionally animated film The Lion King.

The film stars the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and James Earl Jones. This marks Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles debut with Disney.

Plans for a remake of 1994’s The Lion King were confirmed in September 2016 following box office successes for Disney remakes such as The Jungle Book (2016). On October 13, 2016, it was reported that Disney had hired Jeff Nathanson to write the screenplay for the remake.

Principal photography began in mid-2017 on a blue screen stage in Los Angeles. The first shot of the sun rising is the only photographed shot in the movie. It was filmed during a research trip. There are a total of 86 different species to be found in the movie. Everything else is completely computer-generated. Hundreds of artists from over 30 nations worked together to animate the movie and make it as photorealistic as possible.

Director Jon Favreau revealed in an interview that he brought James Earl Jones back as the voice of Mufasa because: “I see it as carrying the legacy across. Just hearing him say the lines is really moving and surreal, the timbre of his voice has changed. That served the role well because he sounds like a king who’s ruled for a long time.”

This film marks the final credit for film editor Mark Livolsi, who passed away in September 2018. The film is dedicated to him.

The Lion King premiered in Hollywood, Los Angeles on July 9, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 19, 2019, in the Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, and IMAX formats. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with many criticizing the lack of originality and for being nearly identical to the original.

The Lion King grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide during its theatrical run, and broke several box-office records, including becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time, and the second-highest-grossing film of 2019, and the highest-grossing Disney readaptation to date.

The film received nominations for Best Animated Feature Film and Original Song categories at the 77th Golden Globe Awards and 25th Critics’ Choice Awards. It was also nominated at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards and 92nd Academy Awards, both for visual effects.

The Lion King was released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment on Digital HD on October 11, 2019, followed by DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray on October 22. It began streaming on Disney+ on January 28, 2020. With the launch of Disney+ Hotstar in India on April 3, 2020, the film became available in multiple languages.

A prequel film directed by Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King, is set for release on December 20, 2024.
