Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, it tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg-a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.—Warner Bros. About The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Movie:
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an anime fantasy film directed by Kenji Kamiyama with a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s characters, the film is produced by New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Animation, and Sola Entertainment, in association with WingNut Films. The cast features Brian Cox, Gaia Wise, Luke Pasqualino, and Miranda Otto, with Otto reprising her role as Éowyn from Peter Jackson’s trilogy.
Announced in June 2021, the film’s development was fast-tracked to retain adaptation rights. Kamiyama was attached early, alongside producer Philippa Boyens, with Addiss and Matthews penning the initial script. Gittins and Papageorgiou later revised the screenplay, focusing on details from The Lord of the Rings appendices, particularly the history of Rohan’s rulers. The story centers on Helm’s unnamed daughter, named Hèra for the film.
The film focuses on the history and backstory of Helm’s Deep, the same location seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002).
Sola Entertainment provided traditional 2D animation, heavily influenced by Jackson’s film aesthetics. Jackson and Fran Walsh are credited as executive producers as of June 2024.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was released theatrically in international markets on December 5, 2024, followed by its U.S. release on December 13, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics.
In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside Kraven the Hunter and is projected to gross $6–7 million from 3,500 theaters in its opening weekend. The film grossed $625,000 in Thursday night previews.
