About Movie:

The Silence of the Lambs is a American psychological horror thriller directed by Jonathan Demme, based on Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel. Starring Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Ted Levine, Scott Glenn, and Anthony Heald.

Though Jodie Foster was passionate about playing Clarice Starling after reading the novel, director Demme initially had doubts despite her recent Oscar win for The Accused (1988).

Filming began in November 1989, primarily in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the FBI Academy at Quantico. Buffalo Bill’s basement and pit design were inspired by real-life criminal Gary M. Heidnik.

Released on February 14, 1991, the film grossed $272.7 million worldwide against a $19 million budget. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Demme won the Silver Bear for Best Director.

The Silence of the Lambs became the third film to sweep the “Big Five” Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Hopkins), Best Actress (Foster), and Best Adapted Screenplay. It’s the only horror film to win Best Picture to date.

Hailed as one of the greatest and most influential films, it ranks high on lists by Empire and the American Film Institute. In 2011, the U.S. Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry for preservation. It spawned a sequel, Hannibal (2001), and two prequels: Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007).
