The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on the 2009 novel trilogy of the same name by author Jenny Han. It is created by Han who also serves as the showrunner and an executive producer.
Season 1 followed her first book, The Summer I Turned Pretty (2009), and season 2 told the story of the second, It’s Not Summer Without You (2010). Just as expected, the third and final season will be based on Han’s third and final book in the series, We’ll Always Have Summer (2011).
On February 8, 2021, Amazon gave the production a series order and premiered on Prime Video on June 17, 2022 consisting of seven episodes. The second season premiered on July 14, 2023, consisting of eight episodes.
On August 3, 2023, ahead of the second season finale, the series was renewed for a third season, with Han and Kucserka returning as showrunners. On May 14, 2024, it was announced that the third season had begun filming.
Cast members revealed that filming for The Last of Us Season 3 was originally scheduled to start in 2023 but faced delays due to the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which lasted from May to November 2023. By late January 2024, it was confirmed that the series had entered pre-production in the Wilmington area, with plans to begin filming in the spring.
