The Tyrant’s Chef Storyline (Plot)

Yeon Ji-Young (Lim Yoon-A) is a French chef with a cheerful and determined personality. One day, she wins a French cooking competition, but she somehow finds herself transported to the Joseon era. She happens to serve her food to King Lee Heon (Lee Chae-Min) of Joseon. He is the worst tyrant who wields absolute power. He does have extraordinary sense of taste. He is able to taste differences of food when even the weather changes. He happens to try Yeon Ji-Young’s food and likes what she made. He decides to take her to the royal palace and have her cook for him. Yeon Ji-Young, who was offered work at a Michelin 3-star rated restaurant in Paris, finds herself working for the tyrant King Lee Heon and presents fusion royal cuisine just for him.

Meanwhile, Kang Mok-Ju (Kang Han-Na) is King Lee Heon’s concubine. She is greedy and hides her endless ambition for power. Prince Jesan (Choi Gwi-Hwa) is a member of royal family. He is the most powerful political enemy of King Lee Heon.

About The Tyrant’s Chef Series

The Tyrant’s Chef (Korean: 폭군의 셰프) is an upcoming South Korean fantasy survival romance drama set to premiere on tvN in the second half of 2025. Directed by Jang Tae-yoo, known for hits like My Love from the Star and Deep Rooted Tree and written by HapJak, the series stars Im Yoon-ah (Yoona), Lee Chae-min, Kang Han-na, and Choi Gwi-hwa.

The project will be helmed by director Jang Tae-yoo, script written by HapJak, and planned with Studio Dragon and Film Grida, and Jung Universe co-managing the production. The series is based on the web novel, Surviving as Yeonsan-gun’s Che,f by Park Kook-jae.

On September 24, 2024, reports state that Im Yoon-ah was being considered for the female lead role, marking her first time working with director Jang Tae-yoo. On December 3, Park Sung-hoon was in discussions about doing the male lead role.

On January 2, 2025, Kang Han-na was completing discussions regarding her appearing. tvN indicated they are canceling the script reading because of the controversy surrounding Park. On January 13, The Korea Times reported that Park has officially withdrawn from the project. It was stated around this time as well that Lee Chae-min was potentially considering the project as an alternative to Park. On January 21, Choi Gwi-hwa was reportedly cast, and is reviewing it. The actor’s lineup, included Im, Lee, Kang, and Choi was finalized and confirmed on January 24.

Based on an IZE report, the first round of filming took place on January 23, 2025.
