Storyline:
The Walking Dead takes place after the onset of a worldwide zombie apocalypse. The zombies, referred to as “walkers”, shamble towards living humans and other creatures to eat them. They are attracted to noise and to scents, including the scent of humans. Humans who are bitten or scratched by walkers die and become walkers themselves. Early in the series, it is suggested that, because any human who dies will reanimate as a walker regardless of cause of death, all living humans carry a pathogen responsible for the mutation that turns humans into walkers. No pathogen is ever confirmed, however. The mutation is activated after the death of the host. The only way to permanently kill a walker is to damage its brain or to destroy the body entirely (e.g. via cremation).
Initially, the series centers on sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes, who wakes up from a coma in the first episode of the series. While Rick was comatose, the world was taken over by walkers. Rick becomes the leader of a group of survivors from the Atlanta, Georgia region who attempt to sustain and protect themselves against attacks by walkers and against other groups of survivors willing to use any means necessary to stay alive.
About Series:
On January 20, 2010, AMC announced the pilot order for a series adapted from The Walking Dead comic book, with Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd as executive producers, and Darabont writing and directing. The series was pre-ordered based on the strength of the source material, scripts, and Darabont’s involvement.
In May 2010, filming for the pilot began in Atlanta, Georgia, after AMC officially ordered a six-episode first season. The remaining episodes began production in June 2010, with Darabont serving as showrunner.
The pilot was screened at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2010, and the series premiered on AMC on October 31, 2010, with international releases following in November. The pilot episode leaked online almost two weeks before its official premiere. In August 2010, AMC confirmed a second season, which would consist of 13 episodes and begin production in February 2011.
Filming for some scenes occurred outside the studio. For example, Woodbury in season three was filmed in downtown Senoia, and The Kingdom scenes were filmed at Fort McPherson, a former military base now used by Tyler Perry Studios.
The Walking Dead concluded its run on November 20, 2022, after 11 seasons and 177 episodes. It aired in 126 countries across 33 languages via Fox International Channels. The show, AMC’s flagship series, became a ratings powerhouse, especially among 18- to 49-year-old viewers, from season three onward. It was well-received by critics and nominated for multiple awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama and the Writers Guild of America Award for New Series. However, its viewership declined in later seasons.
The franchise expanded with spin-offs such as Fear the Walking Dead (2015–2023), The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020–2021), Tales of the Walking Dead (2022), The Walking Dead: Dead City (2023–present), The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023–present), and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024), alongside webisodes and video games.
