Thunderbolts* Storyline
After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

Thunderbolts* is an American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the team Thunderbolts, directed by Jake Schreier from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo
It is the 36th and final film of Phase Five in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
It stars an ensemble cast featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Pierce, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Marvel Studios first teased the creation of a Thunderbolts team within the MCU in 2021. The film was outed as in development in June 2022, with Schreier and Pearson attached. The first cast announcements were in September, and made additional casting announcements in early 2023.
Lee Sung Jin was hired in March 2023 to rewrite the script. Although there were some delays when scheduled film and television coverage paused due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes, seeing some cast changes be made in early 2024, by then Calo had come on board for rewrites.
Principal photography began on February 26, 2024, at Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, under the working title Oops All Berries. This title refers to a variation of the cereal Cap’n Crunch that only has berry-flavored pieces.
Filming also took place at the Medan Pasar square and Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Filming concluded the week of June 19. However, in early December, additional photography took place in Atlanta, including to shoot the “Meth Chicken” sequence from Bob’s memories.
Following the film’s opening weekend, Marvel Studios rebranded the film as The New Avengers. The studio released a video of the cast tearing away the Thunderbolts* logo from the poster to reveal The New Avengers, billboards and theater marquees were also updated to The New Avengers, and new posters were released.

Thunderbolts* had its European premiere on April 22, 2025, at the Cineworld Leicester Square, London, and its Los Angeles premiere on April 28, 2025.
The film was released in the United States on May 2, in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, ScreenX, and 4DX. It was previously scheduled for July 26, 2024, December 20, 2024, and July 25, 2025. It is the final film of Phase Five of the MCU.
