About Toy Story Movie:

Toy Story is an American animated adventure comedy film directed by John Lasseter, based on a story by Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Joe Ranft. It is the first installment in the franchise of the same name and was the first entirely computer-animated feature film, as well as the first feature film from Pixar.

Produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures, the film stars the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, John Ratzenberger, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, and Jim Varney.

Following the success of the 1988 short film Tin Toy, Pixar was approached by Disney to produce a computer-animated feature from a toy’s perspective. Lasseter, Stanton, and Docter’s initial story treatments were rejected by Disney for not being “edgy” enough. After several unsuccessful story reels, production was halted and the script was rewritten to emphasize that toys deeply desire to be played with by children. Pixar, then a small studio with limited finances, produced “Toy Story” under these constraints. The film required 800,000 machine hours and 114,240 animation frames in total.

Toy Story premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 19, 1995, and was released in theaters in North America on November 22 of that year. The film received critical acclaim, with praise directed towards the technical innovation of the animation, script, Randy Newman’s score, appeal to all age groups, and voice performances.

The film was the highest-grossing film during its opening weekend, eventually grossing over $373 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 1995.

The film received three Academy Award nominations—Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song for “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, and Best Original Score—in addition to being honored with a non-competitive Special Achievement Academy Award. This was the first animated film in Oscar history to be nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award.

This was the third Disney film to earn an Oscar. The first two being Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).

The success of Toy Story launched a multimedia franchise, including three sequels—beginning with Toy Story 2 (1999) and a planned fourth sequel—a spin-off film Lightyear (2022), and numerous short films.

Before the film’s release, executive producer and Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs stated, “If Toy Story is a modest hit—say $75 million at the box office, we’ll (Pixar and Disney) both break even. If it gets $100 million, we’ll both make money. But if it’s a real blockbuster and earns $200 million or so at the box office, we’ll make good money, and Disney will make a lot of money.”

Upon its release on November 22, 1995, Toy Story managed to gross more than $350 million worldwide. Disney chairman Michael Eisner stated, “I don’t think either side thought Toy Story would turn out as well as it has. The technology is brilliant, the casting is inspired, and I think the story will touch a nerve. Believe me, when we first agreed to work together, we never thought their first movie would be our 1995 holiday feature, or that they could go public on the strength of it.”

In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked this as the #99 Greatest Movie of All Time. It was the first inclusion of this film on the list.
