Storyline:

Dwight “The General” Manfredi is the American Mafia capo from New York City who has just finished serving a 25-year prison sentence. Upon release, Dwight’s boss sends him to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to establish criminal operations there. Dwight, who does not know anyone in the area, seeks a new crew to help him establish his empire. He first meets taxi driver Tyson Mitchell, whom he recruits as his personal driver, and acquires financing by threatening and later befriending Lawrence “Bodhi” Geigerman, the owner of a local dispensary. While attempting to grow his enterprise, Dwight gains many more associates, including Mitch Keller, who owns a bar Dwight frequents. Dwight initially remains in contact with the syndicate in New York but later begins to despise them. Dwight and his crew become enemies with the outlaw biker gang The Black Macadams. During this time, Dwight experiences personal and family problems as a result of his actions. Stacy Beale, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE; commonly known as ATF) agent and Dwight’s love interest, investigates Dwight’s actions and those of his crew.

About Series:

On December 6, 2021, it was announced that Taylor Sheridan and Terence Winter were developing a series titled Kansas City for Paramount+. Sheridan created the series after signing a multi-year contract with ViacomCBS during the COVID-19 pandemic. He wrote the pilot episode in a week, while Winter relocated the story to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a more remote setting. In 2022, Deadline Hollywood revealed the series was renamed Tulsa King to reflect this change in location. Sylvester Stallone became actively involved in various aspects of production.

Principal photography spanned six months, primarily in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Bethany, concluding on August 31, 2022. Filming locations included Tulsa International Airport, the Center of the Universe, the Mayo Hotel, and Prairie Surf Studios for interiors. Additional scenes were shot in Brooklyn, New York. Filming contributed an estimated $56 million to Oklahoma’s economy. Production wrapped in October 2022.

On November 30, 2022, the series was renewed for a second season. In February 2023, Terence Winter resigned as showrunner due to creative differences but remained an executive producer. Following delays from the 2023 Writers’ Guild of America strike, Winter was re-hired as head writer in February 2024, working independently of Sheridan’s direct oversight.

The second season relocated production to Norcross, Georgia, with filming at Eagle Rock Studios and other locations in Gainesville, Georgia. A second unit captured b-roll in Tulsa. Production ran from April 1 to August 2, 2024. The decision to move filming was influenced by cost concerns and complaints about Oklahoma’s extreme weather.

During the second season’s production, reports surfaced of Sylvester Stallone making derogatory comments about background actors. Allegations included remarks about casting “pretty young girls” instead.

In September 2024, Terence Winter confirmed the early development of a spin-off set in New Orleans. Later that month, Stallone announced that a third season of Tulsa King was also in development.

Costume designer Suzanne McCabe drew inspiration from the Gambino crime family, Franzese Crew, and 1980s newspaper clippings, particularly John Gotti. She used monochromatic colors for New York scenes and softer tones for Oklahoma, reflecting the state’s red soil. Stallone personally selected elements of his wardrobe, such as bolo ties, jewelry, and shoes.

Release

The premiere episode of Tulsa King received an early promotional screening alongside the fifth-season premiere of Yellowstone in AMC Theatres on October 29–30, 2022. The series began its weekly release on Paramount+ on November 13, 2022. The first two episodes aired on Paramount Network on November 20 and 27 as lead-outs for Yellowstone episodes. The first season concluded on January 8, 2023.

In Japan, the series debuted on Paramount+ via Wowow. The first season also aired on CBS with weekly episodes from July 14 to September 8, 2024. The second season premiered in the United States and Canada on September 15, 2024, and internationally on September 16.

The series has proved to be a success by providing a television ratings boost during its broadcast on Paramount Network, and setting viewership records on Paramount+, leading to a subscription boost. Critics gave Tulsa King generally positive reviews; many praised Stallone’s performance but some critics criticized the dialogue and overall story arc. In 2023, Tulsa King was nominated for a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award.
