Storyline:
Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park. It is an intense study of a violent world far from media scrutiny – where land grabs make developers billions, and politicians are bought and sold by the world’s largest oil and lumber corporations. Where drinking water poisoned by fracking wells and unsolved murders are not news: they are a consequence of living in the new frontier. It is the best and worst of America seen through the eyes of a family that represents both.
About Series:
In 2013, Taylor Sheridan began developing the series after growing tired of acting and focusing on screenwriting. Drawing from his experiences in rural areas of Texas and Wyoming, he set the series in Montana and wrote the first scripts in Livingston. Sheridan originally conceived Yellowstone as a film, pitching it as “The Godfather in Montana.” He initially approached HBO with the series, but the network declined.
In May 2017, Paramount Network announced it had greenlit Yellowstone as its first scripted series, issuing a series order for a first season consisting of ten episodes. In October 2017, following sexual abuse allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein, it was announced that his name would be removed from the series credits, along with The Weinstein Company. In January 2018, Paramount Network’s president, Kevin Kay, confirmed that Yellowstone would not feature The Weinstein Company’s logo or credits despite their involvement in production.
Oscar-nominated costume designer Ruth E. Carter joined the production team in August 2017 but departed after the first season. Designer Johnetta Boone took over for the second season. Principal photography began in August 2017 at Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana, which serves as John Dutton’s home. Filming also occurred that month near Park City, Utah, utilizing all three soundstages at the Utah Film Studios.
A teaser trailer was released on February 28, 2018, followed by the first full trailer on April 26. The series held a screening at Seriesfest on June 25, 2018, at Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver, Colorado. The first season was released on Blu-ray and DVD on December 4, 2018, by Paramount Home Media Distribution.
In July 2018, Paramount Network renewed the series for a second season expected to premiere in 2019. The second season officially premiered on June 19, 2019. The series was renewed for a third season in June 2019, which premiered on June 21, 2020. In February 2020, a fourth season renewal was announced, ahead of the third season’s premiere, with the fourth season debuting on November 7, 2021.
In February 2022, the series was renewed for a fifth season, which was split into two parts. Filming for the first part began in June 2022 in Missoula. However, filming for Season 5 Part 2 was delayed in May 2023 due to the Writers Guild of America strike and is set to resume in April 2024. The fifth season premiered on November 13, 2022, and in May 2023, it was announced that Kevin Costner would leave the series at the end of Part 1.
Following their Paramount Network premieres, CMT began reairing the fifth season on Fridays. On July 17, 2023, CBS announced that edited episodes of the series would air on its Fall 2023 schedule. The second part of the fifth and final season is scheduled to premiere on November 10, 2024.
Viewership has grown with each season, with the season 3 premiere attracting 7.6 million viewers and the season 4 premiere reaching 12.7 million. The season 5 premiere garnered 12.1 million viewers. The show has been labeled as a “Heartland drama” and “red state” drama, a characterization that Sheridan himself disputes.
