Storyline:
Based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, YOU is a 21st century love story that asks, “What would you do for love?” When a brilliant bookstore manager crosses paths with an aspiring writer, his answer becomes clear: anything. Using the internet and social media as his tools to gather the most intimate of details and get close to her, a charming and awkward crush quickly becomes obsession as he quietly and strategically removes every obstacle – and person – in his way.
About Series:
In February 2015, Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble began developing a series based on Caroline Kepnes’ book You. They pitched the show to Showtime and Netflix, but were initially unsuccessful. It wasn’t until 2017 that Lifetime picked up the series, giving it a 10-episode straight-to-series order. Filming for the first season took place in New York City, concluding on December 19, 2017.
The show’s official trailer was released by Lifetime on April 10, 2018, and You premiered on Lifetime on September 9, 2018. In May 2018, Netflix acquired international rights, making it available on their platform. By January 2019, Netflix reported the series was on track to be watched by over 40 million viewers within its first month.
Following the success of the first season, Lifetime announced the series was renewed for a second season ahead of the premiere. The setting moved to Los Angeles for the second season, and filming took place from February to June 2019. However, in December 2018, Lifetime rescinded its renewal, and Netflix picked up You ahead of its second season.
On January 14, 2020, Netflix renewed the series for a third season. Filming began in November 2020, with production temporarily paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The third season concluded filming in April 2021.
In October 2021, ahead of the third season premiere, Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season. Filming began in London in March 2022 and concluded in August 2022. Locations included Royal Holloway, South Kensington, and Knebworth House, among others.
On March 24, 2023, Netflix renewed the series for a fifth and final season. Filming for the season began in late March 2024, with an expected release in 2024, though delays were predicted due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
You was ranked among the top ten most-watched original series in the U.S. market, with a total of 10.96 billion minutes streamed in 2020.
