About The Regime TV Series:
The Regime is an American political drama television miniseries created by Will Tracy and directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs. The series stars Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant.
The project was announced by HBO in July 2022. In April 2023, the title of the project was officially revealed to have changed from the working title The Palace to The Regime.
The third collaboration between HBO and Kate Winslet, after Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). It is also the second collaboration between Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant, following Sense and Sensibility (1995). The cast includes one Oscar Winner, Kate Winslet, and one Oscar Nominee, Andrea Riseborough.
Filming in Austria took place in January 2023 at the Schönbrunn Palace and at the Liechtenstein Garden Palace, part of the Liechtenstein Museum, on the Fürstengasse, in the 9th district of Vienna. A first-look image released in February 2023 showed Winslet filming on set in Austria, with principal photography also taking place in the United Kingdom.
The series premiered on March 3, 2024, with all six episodes debuting in the US on HBO and Max and in the UK exclusively on Sky Atlantic and Now from 8 April 2024. It received mixed reviews, and Kate Winslet’s performance has been singled out for praise from critics.
One of the inspirations for the character Chancellor Elena Vernham may have been Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko, who served as Prime Minister twice in the 2000s. Tymoshenko is known for her skills as a public speaker, and for her strategic embrace of traditional dress at public appearances. Many of Elena’s hairstyles resemble the traditional Ukraining plaited hair that Tymoshenko has worn during her photo ops.
