About Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Movie:
The film is based on the DC Comics character Aquaman.
It is intended to be the sequel to Aquaman (2018), and the 15th and final installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film’s sequel title was announced in June 2021.
Director James Wan did not want to rush a sequel but agreed in January 2019 to oversee development. In August, Wan said the sequel was strongly influenced by the film Planet of the Vampires (1965).
It was originally set for release on December 16, 2022, but was moved from there to March 17, 2023, when Warner Bros. adjusted its release schedule due to the impacts of COVID-19 on the workload of visual effects vendors. Finally, it was then moved to December 24, 2023.
Jason Momoa was paid $15 million for his involvement.
The film’s working title is “Necrus”. This is the name of an underwater kingdom in the Aquaman comics.
Principal photography began in London on June 28, 2021, and wrapped on January 12, 2022, in Malibu.
This is the first Aquaman film to be shot taller on 1:90:1 aspect ratio and the third DC film to shot themselves. Unlike the previous film, it was shot on 2:39:1 as taller on the IMAX version with 1:90:1.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom premiered on December 19, 2023, at a fan event screening at the Grove at Farmers Market in Los Angeles. This was noted by Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter for not having a red carpet event and afterparty, with Wan and Momoa attending after a series of blue carpet photo calls and small-scale fan events in London, Beijing, and Los Angeles.
The film was released in the United States on December 22, 2023, in IMAX, 3D, and 4DX, among other premium large formats (PLFs). It was originally set for release on December 16, 2022, but was moved to March 17, 2023, when Warner Bros. adjusted its release schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the workload of visual effects vendors. It was then moved to December 25, 2023, when Warner Bros. Discovery was trying to spread out marketing and distribution costs, before moving forward to December 20, and then pushed back by two days to December 22. The film received mixed reviews from critics.
The film received generally negative reviews from critics and has grossed $434.38 million worldwide.
