Along for the ride is chubby and cheery Thurman Merman, a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity. Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke, who raises the bar for the gang’s ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior.

About Bad Santa 2 Movie:

Bad Santa 2 is a Christmas black comedy-drama film directed by Mark Waters and serves as a sequel to the 2003 film Bad Santa. The screenplay was written by Shauna Cross and Johnny Rosenthal, and it stars Billy Bob Thornton reprising his role as Willie Soke, alongside Tony Cox, Brett Kelly, Kathy Bates, and Christina Hendricks.

Plot Summary

Set 13 years after the original film, Bad Santa 2 finds Willie Soke in a state of depression, struggling with his addictions to alcohol and sex. He attempts suicide but is interrupted by Thurman “The Kid” Merman (Brett Kelly), who has now turned 21 and works at a sandwich shop. Thurman, having lost his father and grandmother, sees Willie as his only family.

Thurman delivers a package containing cash from Marcus (Tony Cox), Willie’s former partner who has recently been released from prison. Marcus convinces Willie to join him for a heist in Chicago targeting a charity run by Willie’s estranged mother, Sunny (Kathy Bates), who is suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Despite their troubled past, Willie reluctantly agrees to the plan.

As they prepare for the heist, Willie finds himself in various comedic and chaotic situations. He begins a relationship with Diane (Christina Hendricks), one of the charity’s founders, while Marcus attempts to seduce security personnel to gain access to the charity’s safe. The plot thickens as betrayals unfold, particularly when Sunny reveals her own intentions.

On Christmas Eve, as they execute their plan during the charity event, complications arise leading to confrontations among the characters. The film culminates in a chaotic chase involving stolen money and unexpected twists that test their loyalties and relationships.

Reception

Unlike its predecessor, Bad Santa 2 received generally negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. It grossed approximately $24.1 million worldwide against a budget of $26 million, marking it as a box-office disappointment compared to the original film’s success.

Legacy

Despite its lackluster reception, Bad Santa 2 continues the story of Willie Soke with its signature dark humor and irreverent take on Christmas themes. While it did not achieve the same acclaim as the original film, it remains part of the Bad Santa franchise and contributes to discussions about unconventional holiday films.
