About Bajirao Mastani Movie:
Bajirao Mastani is a Hindi historical romance action drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles.
It is based on Nagnath S. Inamdar’s Marathi novel Rau, Bajirao Mastani narrates the story of the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I (1700–1740) and his second wife, Mastani.
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced the film in 2003, but production was delayed due to a changing cast. As a passion project for him, the film spent over a decade in development before being revived in 2014. Extensive research preceded pre-production, resulting in twenty-two detailed sets and numerous costumes and props to enhance its opulence and production value.
Priyanka Chopra took a 15-day coaching course to learn the Marathi language as spoken during the Peshwa era. While working on Bajirao Mastani, Chopra was simultaneously filming the American television series Quantico in Montreal, requiring much back-and-forth travel. Ranveer Singh was also required to learn Marathi and shave his head for the part.
Ajay Devgn was offered the lead role but declined due to creative differences with the director over contract terms, such as dates and remuneration, as he was working on his second directorial feature, Shivaay (2016).
Sanjay Leela Bhansali approached Daksha Sheth to train Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in Kalaripayattu, an ancient Indian martial art that originated in the state of Kerala. Sheth also trained Padukone in the dance style of Kathak.
Dimple Kapadia, Shabana Azmi, and Supriya Pathak were all considered for the role of Bajirao’s mother before Tanvi Azmi was cast.
Deepika Padukone was reportedly paid INR 80 million for her work in the film.
Principal photography took place on sets in Film City, with some scenes filmed on location. Visual effects and CGI were used in post-production to enhance several scenes. The film was shot in 217 days between October 2014 and October 2015. Twenty-two sets were created in Film City following a flow chart that included around 960 sketches and countless layouts.
Bajirao Mastani was released on December 18, 2015, and was praised for Bhansali’s direction, technical achievements, and cast performances. It won 7 National Film Awards, including Best Direction and Best Supporting Actress. At the 61st Filmfare Awards, it received 14 nominations and won 9 awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. At the Zee Cine Awards, Ranveer Singh won Best Actor – Male (Critics), and Deepika Padukone won Best Actor – Female.
With a budget of ₹145 crore, including marketing, it was one of the most expensive Hindi films at the time. It became a major commercial success, grossing over ₹356.2 crore worldwide and becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
