Janhvi Kapoor is an Indian actress who works in Hindi films. Born to film actress Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor, she made her acting debut in 2018 with the romantic drama Dhadak, which was a commercial success.

Her subsequent theatrical releases were commercially unsuccessful, but she received nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for playing the titular aviator in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020) and a woman trapped in a freezer in Mili (2022).

Janhvi Kapoor Early Life and Education:

Janhvi Kapoor was born on 6 March 1997. Her father is the film producer Boney Kapoor, the son of the late filmmaker Surinder Kapoor, and her mother is the actress Sridevi. She is the niece of film actors Anil and Sanjay Kapoor. Her younger sister, Khushi, is also an actress. She has two half-siblings, Arjun (an actor) and Anshula Kapoor from her father’s first marriage. Kapoor lost her mother at age 20, when she was found dead of an accidental drowning in Dubai.

Kapoor studied at Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai. Before making her film debut, she took an acting course at Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in California.

Janhvi Kapoor Career:

Janhvi Kapoor debuted in 2018 with Dhadak, co-starring Ishaan Khatter. It is a remake of the Marathi film Sairat, which despite negative reviews, was a commercial success earning ₹1.1 billion worldwide. While critics had mixed opinions about her performance, Kapoor won the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut for her portrayal of a young upper-class girl in the tragic romance.

In 2020, Kapoor appeared in Zoya Akhtar’s segment of the Netflix horror anthology Ghost Stories, receiving praise for her “solid, real act” despite overall criticism of the segments. Following this, she portrayed aviator Gunjan Saxena in the biopic Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, released on Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kapoor’s portrayal garnered mixed reviews, with some critics describing it as “passably steady” while others praised her “pitch-perfect” performance, earning her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

In 2021, Kapoor took on a dual role opposite Rajkummar Rao in the comedy horror film Roohi, which faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic but received negative reviews from critics and underperformed at the box office. The following year, she starred in Good Luck Jerry, a remake of the Tamil film Kolamaavu Kokila, released on Disney+ Hotstar. Kapoor’s portrayal in her next film, Mili, a remake of the Malayalam film Helen, earned praise for its “sweetness and sincerity,” but the movie struggled at the box office. Despite the commercial challenges, Kapoor received another Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare Awards.

Kapoor’s latest venture was in Nitesh Tiwari’s Bawaal (2023), a romantic drama alongside Varun Dhawan, released on Amazon Prime Video. However, the film faced criticism for trivializing the Holocaust, and Kapoor’s performance received mixed reviews, with some critics questioning her charisma. Despite this, she is set to star in upcoming projects, including the sports film Mr and Mrs Mahi with Rajkummar Rao and the political thriller Ulajh where she plays a young Indian Foreign Service officer.
