About Movie:
Dazed and Confused is a 1993 American coming-of-age comedy directed and written by Richard Linklater. Set in Austin, Texas, in 1976, the film follows a diverse group of teenagers navigating the last day of school. Rather than focusing on a single protagonist or central conflict, it intertwines multiple plot threads, such as freshmen enduring hazing rituals, a football star resisting pressure to sign a clean-living pledge, and various characters hanging out at a pool hall.
The ensemble cast includes future stars like Jason London, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Matthew McConaughey, Cole Hauser, Parker Posey, Adam Goldberg, Nicky Katt, Joey Lauren Adams, and Rory Cochrane. Many of the actors were unknown at the time, with McConaughey becoming the film’s breakout star.
After the success of Slacker, Linklater set his sights on making a teen film, drawing inspiration from his own adolescence in Huntsville, Texas. Universal Pictures producer Jim Jacks secured $6 million for the project.
Shooting began in July 1992, with the cast staying at the Crest Hotel in Austin. Linklater encouraged improvisation, allowing the actors to develop their characters and contribute to the script. Filming wrapped in late August, with the final scene showing characters driving to Houston for concert tickets.
The soundtrack, composed of 1970s rock hits, was a key part of the film’s identity and budget. Despite being marketed as a stoner film by Gramercy Pictures, which displeased Linklater, Dazed and Confused initially underperformed at the box office, grossing less than $8 million.
However, the movie gained a cult following through home video releases and is now considered a classic. Entertainment Weekly ranked it third on their list of the 50 Best High School Movies and 10th on their “Funniest Movies of the Past 25 Years” list. The film is celebrated for its authentic, human portrayal of high school life in the ’70s.
