About Movie:
Hereditary is an American horror film written and directed by Ari Aster in his feature directorial debut. The film stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne, and centers on a grieving family that becomes haunted by unsettling events after the death of their secretive grandmother.
Ari Aster’s earlier work, particularly his short film The Strange Thing About the Johnsons, caught the attention of A24, leading the studio to greenlight Hereditary as his first feature film. Aster envisioned the film primarily as a family drama, structured in two distinct halves.
Filming began in February 2017 in Utah. The exteriors of the Graham family’s house and the treehouse were shot in Summit County, Utah, with the cemetery scene filmed at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy, Utah. School scenes were captured at West High School and Utah State Fairpark, while all other interiors, including the two versions of the treehouse, were constructed on a sound stage. The sets were designed to allow for removable walls, enabling wide-angle shots that contributed to the film’s signature dollhouse-like aesthetic.
Hereditary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2018, and was released theatrically in the U.S. on June 8, 2018. It received widespread acclaim and grossed over $87 million, making it A24’s highest-grossing film at the time, a record it held until Everything Everywhere All at Once surpassed it in 2022.
