IPL 2023: JioCinema faces criticism for glitch in streaming second consecutive match

IPL 2023: JioCinema posts 6 cr unique visitors, 2.5 crore app downloads on Day 1

Users have complained about Reliance-owned OTT platform JioCinema’s inability to stream IPL matches without a glitch, even with the usual enthusiasm surrounding the Indian Premier League.

Once again, JioCinema faced backlash on social media as users complained about audio feed loss during English commentary. This issue has arisen after JioCinema faced criticism for app crashes and lagging issues during the first match of the season between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings.

Viacom is offering free streaming of IPL 2023 on JioCinema after Reliance picked up the lion’s share of IPL broadcasting rights for a total of Rs 23,758 crore for 2023-2027.

This year, it is the first time two companies are broadcasting the matches in India and other regions on separate platforms, with Disney Star bagging the TV rights for the Indian subcontinent by paying Rs 23,575 crore.

IPL has opened up the stadiums for spectators after three years, when only a limited number of people were allowed to watch due to Covid restrictions. This time, the IPL not only showcases team rivalries but also gauges Indian viewers’ preferences for watching the games on TV or digital apps. However, Reliance’s streaming app crash and other issues are not the start the company would have hoped for.
