About Movie:
It (titled onscreen as It Chapter One) is an American supernatural horror film directed by Andy Muschietti, with a screenplay by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman. The movie is the first installment of a two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 novel It, focusing on the first half of the book. As the initial entry in the It film series, it follows Tommy Lee Wallace’s 1990 miniseries adaptation.
Starring Bill SkarsgĂ¥rd as the menacing Pennywise the Dancing Clown and Jack Dylan Grazer alongside an ensemble cast, the film centers on the “Losers’ Club”—a group of seven outcast kids (played by Sophia Lillis, Jaden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Grazer) in Derry, Maine, who are terrorized by an ancient entity. In addition to battling Pennywise, they confront their personal fears.
Development began as early as March 2009, when Warner Bros. expressed interest in adapting It for the big screen, initially with David Kajganich attached to direct. The project eventually shifted to Cary Fukunaga in 2012, who contributed to early versions of the script before departing in 2015. Andy Muschietti then stepped in as director, citing inspiration from iconic 1980s films like The Goonies, Stand by Me, The Thing, and The Howling. Production was shifted to New Line Cinema in 2014.
Location scouting for the film was extensive, with production designer Mara LePere-Schloop visiting Bangor, Maine, to capture authentic settings like the Thomas Hill Standpipe and the Kenduskeag Stream, which served as inspiration for “The Barrens” in the story. Principal photography took place in Port Hope, Ontario, and Toronto from June to September 2016.
Nicholas Brooks led the visual effects, with Rodeo FX completing the majority of the film’s 95 VFX shots. The team achieved the unsettling, supernatural visuals that were key to the film’s atmosphere.
It premiered on September 5, 2017, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles before being released nationwide on September 8, in both 2D and IMAX formats. The film was a critical and commercial triumph, grossing over $701 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing horror film (unadjusted for inflation), and breaking several box office records. It also earned high praise for its performances, direction, and cinematography, with many considering it one of the finest Stephen King adaptations.
Accolades followed, including two Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association nominations, three Bogey Awards for its massive success in Germany, and a Critics’ Choice nomination for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie. The film also earned spots on several year-end “best of” lists in 2017. Its sequel, It Chapter Two, was released in September 2019, completing the story.
