About Kanguva Movie:
Kanguva also known and marketed as Kanguva: A Mighty Valiant Saga is a Tamil fantasy action film directed by Siva and produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja, V. Vamsi Krishna Reddy and Pramod Uppalapati under the banners of Studio Green and UV Creations. The film stars Suriya in dual role, leading an ensemble cast that includes Bobby Deol and Disha Patani (in their Tamil debuts), alongside Natarajan Subramaniam, Jagapathi Babu, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala, Anandaraj, Ravi Raghavendra, K. S. Ravikumar and B. S. Avinash.
On 22 April 2019, the film was announced under the tentative title Suriya 39, being the 39th film of Suriya in a leading role. In May, discussions were underway for Nayanthara to star opposite Suriya in a family drama set in a village, reminiscent of Siva’s Viswasam. However, before production commenced, Siva received an opportunity to direct Rajinikanth’s 168th film, Annaatthe (2021). Rajinikanth requested Suriya to postpone their collaboration, which he agreed to. Subsequently, filming was rescheduled for November 2021 due to Siva’s commitments. However, the project faced a hiatus thereafter, and Suriya’s 39th film eventually evolved into Jai Bhim (2021).
The film was launched on 21 August in Agaram Foundation, Chennai with a customary pooja ceremony and was tentatively titled Suriya 42, as it is Suriya’s 42nd film in a leading role. It was also filmed in various locations of Goa, Kerala, Kodaikanal, and Rajahmundry. On 10 January 2024, Suriya announced that filming of his part in Kanguva had concluded.
Post-production started in late June 2023 in Mumbai with work on the visual effects being commenced and Harihara Suthan serves as the visual effects supervisor. On 14 February 2024, Suriya watched the final edit of the film with Siva and the rest of the technical crew members and appreciated the crew for their work.
The film’s motion poster was released on 9 September and revealed that it was a period action film, which would be released in 3D. Nishadh Yusuf, of Thallumaala (2022) fame, replaced Kevin as the editor. On 16 April 2023, the title was announced as Kanguva through a title announcement teaser. A 94-second glimpse video revealing Suriya’s appearance from the periodic portions was released on the midnight of 23 July 2023, coinciding the actor’s birthday, along with the film’s first look also being unveiled on the same day. The teaser garnered 30 million views within a span of 24 hours since its release and received praise for the visuals and setting.
The Kanguva is made on a budget of around ₹300–350 crore, Kanguva is one of the most expensive Indian films to date.
Kanguva was released globally on November 14, 2024, in standard, 3D, and IMAX formats. While Suriya’s performance, production design, and cinematography garnered praise, the film faced criticism for its weak writing, flawed screenplay, editing, and sound design.
Initially planned for release in 10 languages, including Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, English, and other Indian languages, the scope of the film expanded. In November 2023, the makers announced that it would release in 38 languages.
Kanguva is reported to have made a pre-release recovery of more than ₹500 crore (US$63 million) which includes digital, audio and satellite rights, becoming the first Tamil film to do so. The South Indian digital rights of the film were sold for ₹80 crore (US$10 million). The Hindi satellite, digital and theatrical rights were sold for ₹100 crore.
The digital streaming rights of the film for its South Indian languages were acquired by Amazon Prime Video.
Kanguva opened with a worldwide gross of ₹58.62 crore on its first day. The Hindi version contributed approximately ₹3.25 crore nett on its opening day and ₹2.25 crore nett on the second day. In North America, the film grossed $523,000 within three days, falling significantly short of its $2,500,000 break-even target and incurring substantial losses.
In July 2024, Gnanavel Raja announced that the sequel to Kanguva is anticipated to be released in the first half of 2027, potentially in January or during the summer holidays.
