About Movie:
La La Land is a 2016 American musical romantic comedy-drama directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, and J.K. Simmons.
by his passion for musicals from his time as a drummer, Chazelle developed the concept with composer Justin Hurwitz while they were students at Harvard. After moving to Los Angeles in 2010, Chazelle wrote the script, but studios were initially reluctant to back it. However, after the success of Whiplash (2014), Summit Entertainment agreed to produce the film. Originally, Miles Teller and Emma Watson were considered for the lead roles, but when they withdrew, Gosling and Stone were cast.
The film was choreographed by Mandy Moore, with rehearsals spanning three to four months, beginning in May 2015. The cast rehearsed at a production office in Atwater Village, where Gosling practiced piano, Stone worked with Moore, and costume designer Mary Zophres had her own dedicated space.
Principal photography began in Los Angeles on August 10, 2015, and the film was shot over 40 days at more than 60 locations around the city. Notable spots included the Angels Flight trolley, the Hollywood Hills, Griffith Observatory, and the Warner Bros. studio lot. Many scenes were captured in single takes, including the opening pre-credits sequence, filmed in just two days with over 100 dancers.
The movie was shot on 4-perf Super 35mm film using Panavision anamorphic lenses in a CinemaScope aspect ratio, though the original CinemaScope technology is no longer available.
La La Land premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2016, and was released in U.S. theaters on December 9 by Lionsgate. The film became a massive commercial hit, grossing $472 million globally on a $30 million budget. It garnered widespread critical acclaim for Chazelle’s direction, Gosling and Stone’s performances, the musical score, choreography, cinematography, and production design.
The film set a record at the 74th Golden Globe Awards, winning seven awards, and received 11 nominations at the 70th British Academy Film Awards, winning five, including Best Film. At the 89th Academy Awards, La La Land received 14 nominations, tying the record, and won six Oscars, including Best Director for Chazelle, who became the youngest to win the award at age 32.
The film is widely regarded as one of the best musical, romantic, and cinematic achievements of the 21st century. A stage musical adaptation is currently in development.
