About Little Girl Blue Movie:

Little Girl Blue is a biographical docudrama film written and directed by Mona Achache based on the life of her mother, the writer and photographer Carole Achache, starring Marion Cotillard as Carole Achache and Mona Achache as herself. The film is a co-production between France and Belgium and had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in the Special Screenings section on 21 May 2023, where it competed for the Golden Eye and was well received by critics. The title comes from the song of the same name written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.

On January 7, 2020, France’s CNC granted an advance on earnings to Mona Achache’s documentary project “Little Girl Blue,” though production details were not yet formalized. On December 10, 2022, it was announced that Achache had filmed a docudrama about her mother’s life, starring Marion Cotillard as her mother, with Achache also starring and having written the screenplay. Editing began on January 2, 2023. The film’s title comes from the song “Little Girl Blue” by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, with Janis Joplin’s version featured in the film, a song chosen for Achache’s mother’s funeral. The film is a co-production between France’s Les Films du Poisson, France 2, Belgium’s Wrong Men, and RTBF, with a total budget of €910,043, including €32,000 from Belgium’s Tax Shelter and investment from Chanel, where Cotillard is a brand ambassador.

The film was shot in 15 days in Mulhouse, France, from November 20 to December 10, 2022. It was filmed in chronological order. Marion Cotillard completed her scenes in eight days, with only two months of preparation. Since Carole Achache’s apartment no longer exists, scenes set there and other sets were filmed in an abandoned factory in Mulhouse. Due to various complications, a rear projection process was used to simulate exterior shots of Cotillard’s wanderings in Paris. Achache and the director of photography captured early morning and night shots in Paris, which were projected behind Cotillard as she walked on a treadmill. Cotillard wore a curly brown wig, brown contact lenses, and prosthetic makeup for resemblance and aging effects, with makeup applied by Daniel Weimer, Accurate Dreams studio, and Pamela Goldammer, taking two to four hours each morning.

The film was released theatrically in France by Tandem on 15 November 2023, and in Belgium by Galeries Distribution on 3 April 2024.
