A troubled young man falls for an American military auxiliary after a single glance. A year later, he moves to the American Midwest to write his novel, next to the auxiliary’s elderly mother’s house, separated by a grim garden.

A Bologna, ai tempi della Liberazione, un giovane problematico con aspirazioni letterarie si innamora al primo sguardo di una bellissima nurse dell’esercito americano. L’anno dopo, nel Mid West americano, lui andrà ad abitare in una casa contigua a quella della sua amata, separata solo da un nefasto orto. Lì vive l’anziana madre, disperata dalla scomparsa della figlia che non ha dato più notizie di sé dalla conclusione del conflitto. Inizia così da parte del ragazzo una tesissima ricerca che gli farà vivere una situazione terrificante, fino a una conclusione in Italia del tutto inattesa.

L’orto americano (also known as The American Backyard) is an Italian horror mystery thriller film, based on Pupi Avati’s 2023 novel of the same name. Avati also wrote the screenplay and directed the film.

Principal photography for The American Backyard took place in various locations including Rome, Ferrara, Ravenna, and Forlì in Italy, as well as Davenport, Iowa, in the United States. Filming commenced in December 2023 and continued into 2024.

A teaser trailer was released on August 26, 2024

L’orto americano premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024, serving as the festival’s closing film.
