Barroz

Barroz is an upcoming Malayalam action adventure fantasy film, based on the novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure by Jijo Punnoose. It is directed by Mohanlal and written by Kalavoor Ravikumar and Krishnadas Panki. The film marks Mohanlal’s directorial debut. The film stars Mohanlal in the titular role, with Maya, Cesar Lorente Raton, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Tuhin Menon, and Guru Somasundaram, and more. According to Mohanlal, it took one-and-a-half years to finalize the screenplay. Initially, he encouraged Jijo Punnoose to direct the film, but Punnoose declined. Mohanlal also considered other directors before deciding to take up the role himself. He mentioned that Punnoose granted him the freedom to make changes to the story, as the original premise had a more serious tone that underwent revisions.

On 21 April 2019, Mohanlal took to social media to announce his directorial debut—a 3D film adaptation of Jijo Punnoose’s novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure. Principal photography began on 31 March 2021 at sets constructed in Fort Kochi and wrapped up on 29 July 2022. For this film, Mohanlal’s daughter Vismaya Mohanlal worked as an assistant director. In November 2023, it was officially announced that the film would have a worldwide release on 28 March 2024. However, post-production delays have led to a delay in the release, which is projected to be in May 2024.

Kannappa

Kannappa is a fantasy drama film directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh and produced by Mohan Babu. The film is based on the story of Kannappa, a devotee of the Hindu god Shiva. It stars Vishnu Manchu in the title role of Kannappa, a devote of the god Shiva, who also wrote the screenplay of the film based on a story developed by Paruchuri Gopala Krishna, Eshwar Reddy, G. Nageswara Reddy, and Thota Prasad. The film was officially launched with a pooja ceremony on 18 August 2023 at Srikalahasteeswara temple in Srikalahasti. Principal photography began on 25 September 2023 in New Zealand. Kannappa is expected to be released theatrically in the third quarter of 2024. Originally shot in Telugu, the film will be dubbed and released in multiple Indian languages.

Ram

Ram (also known as Ram: Part 1) is an upcoming Malayalam action crime thriller film written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. The film stars Mohanlal as Ram Mohan IPS alongside Trisha, Indrajith Sukumaran, Samyuktha Menon, Adil Hussain, and Siddique. It is the first installment of a two-part film series. Director Jeethu Joseph began working on the pre-production of Ram in early 2020 and it is his most expensive film to date. Principal photography of the film began on 6 January 2020 and was shot for a few days. However, production was delayed for approximately two years and seven months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the film is in the production phase and is expected to be released in 2024.

L2: Empuraan

L2: Empuraan is an upcoming Malayalam action crime thriller film directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy. It stars Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran and Sai Kumar. The film is also marketed with the short title L2E by the makers. It is a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster film Lucifer. On 18 June 2019, a follow-up to the film titled L2: Empuraan was officially announced by Prithviraj, Mohanlal, Murali, and Antony at a press conference held at Kochi. The success of the first film led to the decision to proceed with the second installment in the series. It was set to begin production in the second half of 2020 but was put on hold indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Prithviraj, “Empuraan” means “more than a King and less than a god” and the literal meaning would be “overlord”. He said Empuraan will not be a continuation of the story seen in Lucifer but will explain what happened before and after Lucifer. Principal photography took place on October 5, 2023, in Faridabad. Subsequent sporadic schedules were conducted at various locations, including the United Kingdom, United States, Mexico, and Russia. L2: Empuraan is expected to be released theatrically in 2024.

Rambaan

Rambaan is an upcoming action film directed by Joshiy and starring Mohanlal, Sonu Sood, and Arjun Ashokan. Produced by Chembosky Motion Pictures, Einstin Media, and Nextel Studios, the film’s music is composed by Vishnu Vijay. At the same time, cinematography is done by Sameer Thahir, and editing is done by Vivek Harshan. Rambaan is expected to be released in April 2025.

Vrushabha

Vrushabha is a highly anticipated historical action drama film directed by Nanda Kishore and starring Mohanlal, Shanaya Kapoor, Neha Saxena, Meka Srikanth, and Ragini Dwivedi. The film is set to explore the emotions of love and revenge, focusing on a father-son relationship across generations. The film’s music is composed by Devi Sri Prasad and cinematography is done by Santhosh Thundiyil. Currently, the film is in the production phase and the release date has not been confirmed yet.

Drishyam 3

It will be a sequel to the 2021 film Drishyam 2, which is itself a sequel to the 2013 film Drishyam. After the release of Drishyam 2, producer Antony Perumbavoor commented that it is possible for a third film in the series, although Jeethu Joseph had neither confirmed nor denied it. Antony also said that Jeethu is researching on possible story arcs for Drishyam 3, and there had been discussions with Mohanlal. On 23 February 2021, Jeethu said in a press conference that he currently has figured out the climax for Drishyam 3, but the screenplay and production may take at least three years to materialise.
