About Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Movie:

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a Hindi biographical sports drama film, based on the life of Subedar Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete and Olympian who was a champion of the Commonwealth Games and two-time 400m champion of the Asian Games.

The film was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and written by Prasoon Joshi. The film stars Farhan Akhtar in the title role alongside Divya Dutta, Meesha Shafi, Pavan Malhotra, Yograj Singh, Art Malik, and Prakash Raj in supporting roles with Sonam Kapoor in a cameo appearance.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was inspired by The Race of My Life, an autobiography co-written by Milkha Singh and his daughter, Sonia Sanwalka. Singh sold the film rights for one rupee and inserted a clause stating that a share of the profits would be given to the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust, which was founded in 2003 to assist poor and needy sportspeople.

After the release of Delhi-6 (2009), director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra began developing the film. For research, Mehra visited Chandigarh several times, where he talked for hours with Singh. It took the next two and half years to write the story. According to the director Mehra, it is not a sports film, but a film about the human spirit.

After being turned down by Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan, and Ranveer Singh, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra finalized Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor for the lead roles in September 2011. Farhan Akhtar, inspired by Milkha Singh’s life, visited Punjab to meet the athlete and his family. He underwent rigorous physical training after agreeing to the role following a story session with Mehra.

Milkha Singh challenged Farhan Akhtar for a race when they met for the first time during their research for the film.

Sonam Kapoor, who plays Biro, said that she charged Rs 11 as her acting fees for the movie. Prakash Raj also worked on this film for free.

Pakistani singer-actor Meesha Shafi is making her Bollywood debut with the movie. She has earlier worked in Mira Nair’s ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’.

Principal photography began in February 2012 and mainly took place in Punjab, India, with some scenes shot in Delhi, Tokyo, Melbourne, and Rome.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was released on July 12, 2013, on 1200 screens worldwide including 140 screens in the USA. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics domestically. It performed very well at the box office, eventually being declared a “super hit” domestically as well as a hit overseas.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag grossed ₹2.1 billion (US$25 million) worldwide and is the fifth highest-grossing 2013 Bollywood film.

Farhan Akhtar won best actor award at Filmfare Awards.
