About Kalki 2898 AD Movie:

Kalki 2898 – A.D is an Indian epic mythological-science fiction dystopian film written and directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by C. Aswani Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies. The film stars an ensemble cast featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani.

The movie was announced under the working title Project K in February 2020 coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Vyjayanthi Movies. At the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, the new title ‘Kalki 2898-A.D’ was officially announced and the teaser trailer was debuted at the event.

The film was made on a budget of ₹600 crore (US$75 million), making it the most expensive Indian film ever made.

Principal photography commenced in Hyderabad in July 2021 on the occasion of Guru Purnima. Around 70% of the filming was completed by June 2023.

Deepika Padukone is making her debut in Telugu cinema with this film. Disha Patani joined the cast, marking her return to Telugu cinema after Loafer (2015).

The film would be Amitabh Bachchan’s first full-length role in a Telugu film, following his previous cameo appearance in Manam (2014) and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019). Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Hassan to work together after 39 years since Geraftaar (1985). Amitabh Bachchan had suffered major injury while shooting for the film had hurt his rib cage and was on bed rest for some time.

In August 2020, A. R. Rahman was initially approached to compose music for the film but he did not sign the film.

Director Nag Ashwin stated that the film needed high-end technology and futuristic vehicles to be developed for the film. While they can be recreated using computer-generated imagery (CGI), Ashwin wanted them to feel “authentic and genuine”, therefore opted to build these vehicles from scratch with a dedicated team of engineers. In March 2022, Ashwin requested businessman Anand Mahindra to provide technical support to build such types of vehicles.

Instead of shooting the entire film in a single stretch, the team divided its 80–90 days of shoot into 7–8 days every month.

On 19 July 2023, the film’s first look was released. It received a negative response and was later deleted by makers from social media handles and uploaded with some changes which also received criticism.

On 27 May 2024, the makers and Amazon Prime Video announced a two-part animated prelude titled Bujji and Bhairava which is set to stream on the platform from 31 May 2024.

Initially aimed for a 2022 release and then scheduled for January 2024, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and production works. The film again got postponed from 9 May 2024 due to post-production works and the 2024 Indian general election. It was theatrically released on 27 June 2024. The film was released in Telugu and Hindi while also dubbed versions in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and English. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics

According to Indian trade sources, Kalki 2898 AD archived a pre-release business recovery of ₹600 crore (US$72 million), with the sale of satellite, digital, music and theatrical rights, out of which, ₹390 crore (US$47 million) has been earned from the theatrical rights. The overseas distribution rights of the film were acquired by The Village Groupe for ₹80 crore (US$9.6 million).

The digital streaming rights were acquired by Amazon Prime Video and satellite rights by Gemini TV.

In late May 2024, it was reported that the film would have a sequel. On 26 June, a day prior to the film’s release, Ashwin commented on Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2 and stated that it would begin in three years. After the release of the film, it was revealed to be part of an upcoming franchise titled Kalki Cinematic Universe.
