The film mainly follows the famous 1597 Battle of Myeongryang during the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592-1598), where the iconic Joseon Admiral Yi Sun-sin managed to destroy a total of 133 Japanese warships with only 13 ships remaining in his command. The battle, which took place in the Myeongryang Strait off the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula, is considered one of the greatest victories of Yi.
About The Admiral: Roaring Currents Movie:
The Admiral: Roaring Currents (명량) is a South Korean epic historical action drama film directed and produced by Kim Han-min. The film stars Choi Min-sik, Ryu Seung-ryong, Cho Jin-woong, and Kim Myung-gon.
It is based on the historical Battle of Myeongnyang, one of the most significant naval battles in Korean history, where Admiral Yi Sun-sin led the Korean navy to a miraculous victory against the Japanese fleet.
The set pieces, costumes, weapons, and more were all designed and constructed after extensive research. For example, the crew designed a Japanese warship that appeared so realistic that historians at a historical museum in Japan were in awe when they saw it. Only 8 ships were built for the film-the rest were constructed by CG.
The Admiral: Roaring Currents was released theatrically in South Korea on July 30, 2014. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences. It became the all-time most-watched and one of the highest grossing South Korean movies of all time with 17.6 million tickets sold nationwide.
The Admiral: Roaring Currents grossed US$4.77 million on its first day. This was the all-time highest opening day box office in South Korea for both foreign and domestic films, breaking the previous record set by Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014).
The film became the first film to sell more than 14 million tickets in South Korean theaters and the first domestic film to exceed the US$100 million mark. At 17,607,820 admissions, it has grossed US$132 million in South Korea.
It opened in limited release across 30 theaters in North America, beginning August 15, 2014. The film has grossed CN¥26.53 million in China, US$2,589,811 in the United States, and US$138.3 million internationally.
