Storyline:

20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

About Series:

The Last of Us, based on the Naughty Dog video game franchise, takes place twenty years into a fungal pandemic that transforms hosts into zombie-like creatures, leading to societal collapse. The first season, adapting the 2013 game, follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting Ellie (Bella Ramsey), an immune teenager, across a post-apocalyptic U.S. The second season, expected to adapt part of the 2020 sequel, is set five years later and introduces Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).

Guest stars include Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter Sarah, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, Anna Torv as Joel’s partner Tess, Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy, Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Montreal Woodard as brothers Henry and Sam, and Melanie Lynskey and Jeffrey Pierce as resistance leaders Kathleen and Perry. Season two introduces Isabela Merced as Dina, Ellie’s romantic interest, and Young Mazino as Dina’s ex, Jesse.

The first season was filmed in Alberta from July 2021 to June 2022, and the second season in British Columbia from February to August 2024. It marks HBO’s first video game adaptation, produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, the Mighty Mint, and Word Games. Game co-creator Neil Druckmann assisted Craig Mazin with writing the first season’s nine episodes, with Halley Gross and Bo Shim joining for the second season’s seven episodes. The score was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, with David Fleming.

Premiering on January 15, 2023, the series earned critical acclaim for its performances, writing, production design, and score, with some calling it the best video game adaptation. It won eight Primetime Emmy Awards out of 24 nominations. The series premiere attracted nearly 40 million viewers within two months across HBO channels and Max, with an average of 32 million viewers per episode by May, making it HBO’s most-watched debut season. Season two is set for a 2025 release.
