About Movie:
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a 2012 American coming-of-age romantic drama, written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, based on his 1999 novel of the same name. The film stars Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Mae Whitman, Kate Walsh, Dylan McDermott, Joan Cusack, and Paul Rudd.
Chbosky always intended to adapt his novel into a film but was cautious about selling the rights. He eventually sold them to Mr. Mudd Productions on the condition that he would both write and direct the adaptation.
Filming took place in the Cincinnati and Pittsburgh metropolitan areas from May 9 to June 29, 2011. The movie was shot in locations such as Pittsburgh’s South Hills, including South Park and Peters Township High School.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show scenes were filmed at The Hollywood Theater in Dormont, a nostalgic location for Chbosky, who had seen the film there as a youth. Additional scenes were filmed within Pittsburgh’s city limits, featuring iconic spots like the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Fort Pitt Bridge, and Mount Washington.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2012, to a standing ovation. Released in the U.S. on September 21, 2012, by Summit Entertainment, it was well-received by critics who praised Chbosky’s screenplay, direction, and the performances of Lerman, Watson, and Miller. The film also resonated for its soundtrack, emotional depth, and handling of sensitive topics.
It grossed $33.3 million worldwide on a $13 million budget and won several accolades, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature and a GLAAD Media Award.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower has since gained a cult following, particularly among Zillennials, and is seen as emblematic of the “Tumblr era” of the early 2010s.
