About Vishwaroopam Movie:
Vishwaroopam is an action thriller written and directed by Kamal Haasan, who also plays the lead role. The film also stars Pooja Kumar, Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur, Andrea Jeremiah, Nassar, and Jaideep Ahlawat in supporting roles.
Development of the project began in 2010. Initially, Selvaraghavan was set to direct the film, but on May 24, 2011, he was ousted from the project due to commitments with his brother Dhanush. Kamal Haasan then decided to direct the film himself, also writing the story, screenplay, and dialogues.
By February 2011, newcomer Sonakshi Sinha was approached to play the lead female character and was confirmed to play Haasan’s wife, with a salary of ₹2 crore (US$240,000). However, due to delays and conflicting dates with her Hindi assignments, she opted out by July. After Sinha’s exit, actresses like Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, and Sonam Kapoor were considered.
Vidya Balan was also approached for the lead female role but declined due to prior commitments. By mid-August, Sameera Reddy was reported to have been cast, while Anushka Shetty was finalized soon after. In early November 2011, New York-based model actress Pooja Kumar was signed after being recommended to Kamal Haasan by his partner, Gautami.
Filming began in August 2011 in Chennai and included extensive overseas shoots in the United States and Canada, as well as domestic locations in Chennai and Mumbai. Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment handled Vishwaroopam’s graphics.
Initially, music director Yuvan Shankar Raja was reported to compose the musical score of the film. But later Kamal Haasan selected Shankar-Ehsan-Loy to compose the music.
The first-look poster and a teaser of the film were released in May 2012 as part of the film’s marketing process. An Auro 3D trailer of the film was released on November 7, 2012, coinciding with Haasan’s birthday.
Vishwaroopam is the first Indian film to utilize the new Auro 3D sound technology. The film was also to be the first Indian film to be released via direct-broadcast satellite, also known as direct-to-home (DTH), but after protests of theatre owners, this plan was dropped.
Vishwaroopam was released worldwide, excluding Tamil Nadu, on January 25, 2013, and was released in Tamil Nadu on February 7, 2013. The Hindi version was released on February 1, 2013.
Vishwaroopam garnered positive reviews and grossed ₹ 220 crore worldwide against a budget of ₹95 crore. The film was honored with awards for Best Art Direction and Best Choreography at the 60th National Film Awards. A sequel to the film, Vishwaroopam 2, was released on 10 August 2018.
