The Most Anticipated Movies of 2024

Mean Girls | January 12

One of the most anticipated films for this year is the musical teen comedy film “Mean Girls”, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., which follows the story of high school drama, friendships, and rivalries.

The screenplay by Tina Fey is based on the Broadway musical of the same name, itself inspired by Mark Waters’s 2004 comedy film and Rosalind Wiseman’s book. It stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, and Christopher Briney, with Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprising their roles from the original film.

The Book of Clarence | January 12

American biblical comedy-drama film written and directed by Jeymes Samuel. It follows a struggling down-on-his-luck man named Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield) living in A.D. 33 Jerusalem who looks to capitalize on the rise of Jesus Christ, by claiming to be a new Messiah sent by God, in an attempt to free himself of debt and start a life of glory for himself.

The Book of Clarence had its world premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 2023, and was released by TriStar Pictures in the United States on January 12, 2024.

The Beekeeper | January 12

Looking for an action thriller film? One man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers”.

Directed by David Ayer and written by Kurt Wimmer. Jason Statham is featured as a lead cast.

Argylle | February 2

Another film is a spy action comedy film directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn which premiered at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on January 24, 2024.

The story follows Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, and is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books, featuring a fictional secret agent named Argylle (Henry Cavill), get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aidan 9Sam Rockwell), an undercover spy, shows up to save her from being kidnapped or killed, Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing and no one are what they seem, including to the discovery that Agent Argylle, in fact, exists for real.

Madame Web | February 14

Based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name, directed by S. J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Claire Parker.

It stars Dakota Johnson in the title role. In the film, Cassie Webb (Dakota Johnson) confronts her past while trying to save three young women and their futures from a deadly adversary.

Bob Marley: One Love | February 14

Now, we can feel the life of reggae singer and songwriter Bob Marley, from his rise to fame up until he died in 1981. The film stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley, alongside Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, and James Norton as Chris Blackwell.

It is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin, from a story by Winter and Flowers.

Drive-Away Dolls | February 14

This comedy caper follows Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.

Dune: Part Two | March 1

The sequel to Dune (2021), it is the second of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert, and directed by Denis Villeneuve. It follows Paul Atreides as he unites with the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis to wage war against House Harkonnen. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem reprise their roles from the first film, with Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Léa Seydoux joining the ensemble cast.

Kung Fu Panda 4 | March 8

It is the fourth installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, and the sequel to Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016), directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, and features Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and Ian McShane reprising their roles from the previous films, with Awkwafina, Viola Davis, and Ke Huy Quan joining the cast as new characters.

Love Lies Bleeding | March 8

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire | March 21

Road House is a reimagining of the 1989 film of the same name. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Daniela Melchior, Conor McGregor, J. D. Pardo, Arturo Castro and Billy Magnussen.

The plot follows a former UFC middleweight fighter (Jake Gyllenhaal) who ends up working at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys where things are not as they seem.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire | March 29

It is a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and the fifth film in the MonsterVerse. It is also the 38th film of the Godzilla franchise, the 13th film in the King Kong franchise, and the fifth Godzilla film to be completely produced by an American film studio.

Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle reprise their roles from the previous film. In the film, Godzilla and Kong must work together against an undiscovered threat that threatens the Hollow Earth and the surface.

Civil War | April 12

In the near future, a team of journalists traveling across the United States during a rapidly escalating civil war that has engulfed the entire nation, struggling to survive during a time when the government has become a dystopian dictatorship and partisan extremist militias regularly commit political violence.

The film is written and directed by Alex Garland, and starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman.

Challengers | April 26

The Rom-com sports drama film ‘Challengers,’ directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes.

The film stars Zendaya, the wife and coach of a Grand Slam champion sign him up for a Challenger event where he (Mike Faist) will face off against her former lover (Josh O’Connor).

The Fall Guy | May 3

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), a battered and past-his-prime stuntman, finds himself working on a film set with the famous star for whom he doubled long ago. When the star goes missing, and the film (which is being directed by Colt’s ex-girlfriend(Emily Blunt)), is in danger of being shut down, he volunteers to investigate the disappearance and find the missing actor.

Back to Black | May 10

The film will delve into the life and career of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, beginning with her early days in the early 2000s as a North London jazz musician and culminating in her rise to fame as a Grammy-winning singer with hit songs like “Rehab” and “Back to Black”.

IF | May 17

IF is a live-action animated fantasy comedy film written, directed, and co-produced by John Krasinski.

A young girl named Bea (Cailey Fleming) gains the ability to see people’s imaginary friends, referred to as “IFs” for short, who have been abandoned by the kids they helped. Bea then discovers that her neighbor, The Man Upstairs (Ryan Reynolds), has the same ability.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | May 24

Produced and directed by George Miller’s fifth film in the Mad Max franchise and serves as both a spin-off and a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). It stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character Imperator Furiosa, with Chris Hemsworth also starring.

As the world falls, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and into the hands of a Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. While two Tyrants war for dominance over the Citadel, Furiosa survives many trials as she plots a way back home through the Wasteland.

The Garfield Movie | May 24

Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt), the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, is about to have a wild outdoor adventure! Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes | May 24

Inside Out 2 | June 14

Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira), who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety (Maya Hawke) shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.

The sequel to Inside Out (2015), is being directed by Kelsey Mann (in his feature directorial debut).

A Quiet Place: Day One | June 28

A Quiet Place: Day One is a horror film written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, based on an original story by John Krasinski and Sarnoski. It is intended to be a spin-off prequel and the third overall installment of the A Quiet Place film series.

Horizon: An American Saga | June 28

Two-part American epic Western film co-written, produced, directed by, and starring Kevin Costner. Set in the pre– and post–American Civil War period depicting the expansion of the American west.

Despicable Me 4 | July 3

It will serve as the sequel to Despicable Me 3 (2017), the fourth main installment, and the sixth installment overall in the Despicable Me franchise. Directed by Chris Renaud, and co-directed by Patrick Delage (in his feature directorial debut).

Twisters | July 19

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, is a standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos.

Deadpool & Wolverine | July 26

One of the most anticipated films of 2024 is Deadpool & Wolverine, based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool, it is intended to be the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).

The film is being directed by Shawn Levy. Ryan Reynolds stars as Wade Wilson / Deadpool. More exciting about the film is Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Wolverine from the X-Men films. Deadpool will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine.

Borderlands | August 9

Based on the video game series of the same name developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. The film is directed by Eli Roth, and stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Bobby Lee, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Kraven the Hunter | August 30

The superhero film directed by J. C. Chandor, is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is intended to be the fifth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role alongside Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbott, and Alessandro Nivola.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice | September 6

The sequel to Beetlejuice (1988) is a fantasy horror comedy film directed by Tim Burton and stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe.

Transformers One | September 13

The story takes place entirely on Cybertron and explores the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron, “separate and apart” from what has been portrayed in the live-action films.

Its voice cast consists of Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax / Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-One, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion.

Saw XI | September 27

The film is the eleventh installment in the Saw film series, Tobin Bell has played the killer, aka John Kramer, in the films. Producer Oren Koules has stated the upcoming film will likely be a direct sequel to Saw X (2023).

Joker: Folie a Deux | October 4

Todd Phillips directed a musical thriller film ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ slated to be a sequel to the 2019 film Joker. Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the DC Comics character the Joker, and Lady Gaga plays Harley Quinn. Zazie Beetz also reprises her role from the first film.

Smile 2 | October 18

Smile 2 is a sequel to Smile (2022), with Parker Finn once again serving as writer and director. Naomi Scott was cast in the leading role. Lukas Gage was added to the cast of the sequel. Kyle Gallner will reprise his role as Joel with Rosemarie DeWitt also joining.

Terrifier 3 | October 25

Written and directed by Damien Leone. It stars Lauren LaVera, Elliott Fullam, David Howard Thornton, and Samantha Scaffidi, who reprise their roles from prior films.

The film is a sequel to Terrifier 2 (2022) and will reintroduce possessed survivor Victoria Heyes in a more prominent role in the series.

The third film is centered around Art the Clown and is the fourth feature-length film to include the character (after the anthology film All Hallows’ Eve), in the Terrifier franchise.

Venom: The Last Dance | November 8

It is the sixth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the sequel to Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). The film is being written, co-produced, and directed by Kelly Marcel from a story she wrote with Tom Hardy, who reprises his roles as Eddie Brock and Venom and also serves as a producer.

Gladiator II | November 22

Serving as a sequel to Gladiator (2000), directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa.

It stars Paul Mescal as Lucius – a grown man, the nephew of antagonist Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), along with Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Derek Jacobi, the last two reprising their roles.

Moana 2

The second installment in the Moana franchise and a sequel to Moana (2016). The film was written and directed by David G. Derrick Jr. (in his feature directorial debut) and produced by Osnat Shurer. Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively.

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana journeys to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever faced.

Chu, adaptation of Holzman and Schwartz’s stage musical Wicked, which is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire and characters from the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and its 1939 film adaptation.

Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film revolves around Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), a green-skinned woman, and explores the path that leads her to become the Wicked Witch of the West.

The Karate Kid | December 13

The plot will involve a teen from China moving to the East Coast and beginning to study martial arts. Jackie Chan reprising his role from the 2010 film in the new “Karate Kid” film, alongside Ralph Macchio from the first three films and the television series Cobra Kai.

Jonathan Entwistle will serve as director from a script written by Rob Lieber, and Karen Rosenfelt will produce the film.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim | December 13

Based on a story told in the appendices of the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. A prequel set 261 years before the events depicted in the 2002 film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Directed by Kenji Kamiyama and stars Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, a legendary King of Rohan. Also starring is Miranda Otto, reprising her role as Éowyn from the live-action The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Mufasa: The Lion King | December 20

It is intended to be the live-action styled photorealistic computer-generated imagery prequel to the similarly created 2019 version and the original 1994 film The Lion King. Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani reprise their character roles from the remake and are joined by Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr., who voice their young versions of King Mufasa and his younger brother Scar, respectively.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | December 20

Based on the video game series published by Sega, the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), and a follow-up to Knuckles (2024). Directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, the film stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, and Idris Elba reprising their roles.

Nosferatu | December 25

Following Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), it is the second remake of the 1922 German Expressionist film of the same name written by Henrik Galeen and directed by F. W. Murnau, which in turn is an “unauthorized and unofficial” adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.

Directed by Robert Eggers, and stars Bill Skarsgård as the titular vampire.
