Storyline:

Following the disappearance of two girls, impulsive young police officer Paul Chartier is assigned to the secret unit “Maldoror” to monitor a dangerous sex offender. When the operation is undone by the dysfunctional police and legal system, a frustrated and obsessed Chartier takes the hunt for the perpetrator into his own hands.

About Movie:

Maldoror is a crime thriller film co-written and directed by Fabrice Du Welz, drawing inspiration from the judicial scandal involving Belgian serial killer and child molester Marc Dutroux. The film stars Anthony Bajon as a young policeman who becomes fixated on a case linked to a notorious child abuser, with Alba Gaïa Bellugi, Alexis Manenti, and Sergi López in supporting roles. This project is a co-production between Belgium and France.

In September 2021, shortly after the premiere of Inexorable, Du Welz announced that he was finalizing the screenplay for Maldoror, with shooting anticipated to commence in 2022. The screenplay was co-written with Domenico La Porta.

While filming was initially slated to start in fall 2022, Frakas Productions released a casting call in August 2022, indicating that filming would take place in March 2023 in the Charleroi region. Ultimately, principal photography began on May 4, 2023, and wrapped on June 28, 2023, with shooting in Marchienne-au-Pont starting on May 8, where the town hall served as a production location.

Manu Dacosse, who has collaborated with Du Welz on previous films like Alleluia (2014), Adoration (2019), and Inexorable (2021), served as the cinematographer.

Maldoror was selected for out-of-competition screening at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, premiering on September 3, 2024. This marks Du Welz’s first entry in the Venice lineup since Vinyan (2008). International sales are managed by WTFilms. The film is set for theatrical release in Belgium through O’Brother Film and will be distributed in France by The Jokers Films on January 15, 2025.
