Storyline:
The drama “Being Maria” reframes the short career and tragic life of “Last Tango in Paris” star Maria Schneider in a post-#MeToo light. “Happening” breakout Anamaria Vartolomei plays Schneider, while Matt Dillon takes on the role of her co-star Marlon Brando. The film in part tracks the controversial production and wrenching fallout of Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1972 masterpiece — a landmark that made Schneider an icon while locking her into a sexualized image she never could escape. Palud’s sophomore feature also marks a fitting echo for the Gallic auteur, who kicked off her professional life on the set of Bertolucci’s “The Dreamers.”

Being Maria (French: Maria) is a French biographical drama film directed by Jessica Palud from a screenplay by Palud and Laurette Polmanss, freely adapted from Vanessa Schneider’s 2018 memoir My Cousin Maria Schneider. It is about the actress Maria Schneider (1952–2011) and dramatizes her experiences working on Bernardo Bertolucci’s feature film Last Tango in Paris (1972).
It stars Anamaria Vartolomei in the title role, with Céleste Brunnquell, Giuseppe Maggio, Yvan Attal, Marie Gillain, Jonathan Couzinié and Matt Dillon in supporting roles.
Principal photography for the film began on May 29, 2023, in Paris and continued in the Brittany region. Filming lasted 25 days, with 10 days spent in the Ille-et-Vilaine department, including locations such as Rennes, Saint-Germain-du-Pinel, the Château d’Apigné in Le Rheu, the Résidence Oberthür in Rennes, and a beach in Dinard.
Shooting in Brittany concluded on June 30, 2023, followed by post-production in Rennes. Anamaria Vartolomei, one of the cast members, described it as her most challenging role to date and experienced an “emotional release” upon the production’s completion.
It had its world premiere in the non-competitive Cannes Premiere section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2024. It was theatrically released on 19 June 2024 by Haut et Court.
