Storyline:

Single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music. From the musical mind of John Carney, “Flora and Son” explores the bond between a mother and son on a journey toward a new harmony.

About Flora and Son Movie:

Principal photography took place on location in Dublin. Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were photographed with guitars whilst filming in Griffith Park in the summer of 2022.

The songs reportedly produced a “spontaneous clap-a-long and rapturous standing ovation” during its first screening. Two days after premiering, Apple TV+ bought the distribution rights for “just under” $20 million.

During a Q&A at Sundance Film Festival, director John Carney said that this film was a dedication to mothers, similar to how Sing Street was “for brothers everywhere”.

This is John Carney and Jack Reynor’s first collaboration since Sing Street (2016).

Flora and Son premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2023. The songs reportedly produced a “spontaneous clap-a-long and rapturous standing ovation” during its first screening. Two days after premiering, Apple Studios bought the distribution rights for “just under” $20 million. It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2023. It was released in select theaters in the United States on September 22, 2023, before streaming worldwide on Apple TV+ starting September 29, 2023. It is scheduled to be released in Irish cinemas on February 23, 2024.
