About Oppenheimer Movie:
Oppenheimer is an epic biographical thriller drama film written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan. It follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear weapons during World War II.
Director Christopher Nolan approached multiple studios for the project, including Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Apple Studios due to his strained relationship with Warner Bros. On September 14, it was confirmed that Universal Pictures would finance and distribute the film, with production set to begin in the first quarter of 2022.
The casting process was so secretive that some of the actors did not know which role they were going to play until they signed on.
The film uses a combination of IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film.
Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s first film not to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures domestically or internationally since Memento (2000), as well as his first film to receive an R rating since Insomnia (2002).
Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt took pay cuts to work on the film, earning $4 million each instead of their usual $10–20 million salaries.
Considering the film’s budget and marketing costs, Variety stated that the film will need to gross at least $400 million worldwide to make a profit.
This is Christopher Nolan’s second film related to World War II events following Dunkirk (2017). The film is also scheduled to be released exactly 6 years to the day after Dunkirk.
Some of Nolan’s demands included a production budget of $100 million and an equal marketing budget, a theatrical window of at least 100 days, 20 percent of the film’s first-dollar gross, and three weeks before and after the film’s release in which Universal could not release another new film.
For the first time, the black and white film will be used in an IMAX film camera to shoot certain scenes.
Producer Charles Roven pitched the film to writer/director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas by telling them about the biographical book American Prometheus. Intrigued by the book, Nolan asked to read it. After Nolan read the book, he took the job of directing the film.
The fourth collaboration between Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema. They previously worked in Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017) and Tenet (2020).
Sixth collaboration between Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan after Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Dunkirk (2017).
Oppenheimer had the world premiere at Le Grand Rex in Paris, France on July 11, 2023, followed by the British premiere at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London, England, United Kingdom on July 13, and is set to have an American premiere at AMC Loews Lincoln Square in New York City on July 17. Both London and New York premieres were affected by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, as some actors left the London premiere early, and Universal Pictures canceled the red carpet event for the New York premiere. It was released theatrically on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures. In addition to standard cinemas, it will be also released in various film formats including IMAX 70 mm (30 prints), standard 70 mm (113 prints), and 35 mm (around 80 prints).
The film grossed $894.9 million worldwide on a $100 million production budget, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 2023, the highest-grossing World War II-related film, and the second-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
It received critical acclaim, with particular praise for the cast performances, screenplay, visuals, themes, and historical accuracy.
