- The original idea for the story arose in around 2005, when filmmaker Warwick Thornton wrote a script which drew on his negative experiences in a Catholic boarding school as a boy, featuring a Benedictine monk.
- Principal photography began in October 2022 and wrapped in December.
- Actress Cate Blanchett is a producer on this picture which was filmed in South Australia (S.A.).
- Screen Australia’s First Nations Department provided major production investment in association with Screen NSW (New South Wales) and the South Australian Film Corporation. The First Nations Department first backed this project over a number of years whilst it has been in development.
- The New Boy premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 19 May 2023, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in Australia on 6 July 2023 by Roadshow Films.
