Storyline:
Viola Vitale, a gorgeous and magnetic woman who has always worked in the field of fashion journalism, moves from Paris back to Palermo, armed only with optimism and trust, to search for the father she never knew. There, Viola starts working for an online publisher, covering the crime beat, collaborating with Inspector Francesco Demir. He’s charismatic and seductive, with top investigative talent, but little faith in humanity…in that, the polar opposite of Viola. Highly intuitive on the job, Demir is also impulsive and given to bending the rules. The pair work side-by-side on homicide cases, she as a reporter, he as a cop. Hugely difficult at first, given the clash of opposites, in time they learn to collaborate successfully.
In part because Viola can count on her special gift: synesthesia. Synesthesia is not merely a figure of speech, but also the actual spontaneous and uncontrollable blending of multiple senses – sight and hearing, for example. In Viola’s case, she associates emotions with colors. When she looks at a person, she sees a color they give off, allowing her to read their deepest, possibly hidden, feelings: fear, joy, pain – Viola develops the ability to grasp the true mindsets of people she encounters. Behind her synesthesia, however, she guards a bigger secret, to do with her real reason for returning to Palermo.
About Viola come il mare TV Series:
Viola come il mare is an Italian action comedy crime TV series starring Francesca Chillemi and Can Yaman. It is loosely based on the novel Conosci l’estate? by Simona Tanzini, published by Sellerio Editore in 2020.
The first season was filmed between September 2021 and April 2022, spanning locations in Palermo and Rome, specifically Terrasini and Termini Imerese (PA), Civita Castellana (VT), Formello, and Ostia (all three in Rome). In Sicily, filming took place at various sites including Torre Alba, the fishermen’s village, Mondello beach, between Monte Pellegrino and Capo Gallo, the port of Palermo, and iconic monuments such as the Massimo theater and the Palazzina dei Quattro Pizzi (located within the former Tonnara Florio area). Additionally, scenes were shot along the Peppino Impastato seafront in Terrasini, notably featuring the filming of a pivotal accident scene involving a young boy’s discovery.
The second season was filmed from July 17th to December 23rd, 2023, once more spanning between Rome and Palermo.
The series was announced by Can Yaman, on August 10, 2021, through his Instagram profile. Furthermore, from 2 August 2022 onwards the promos of the series were broadcast on Canale 5.
The first season was aired on Canale 5 from 30 September 2022 to 4 November 2022. The first season was also released on Netflix on March 1, 2023.
Viola come il mare received Premio Moige, an award given to 40 series, documentaries, entertainment shows, news and reality shows considered the best family-friendly TV content by the association Movimento Italiano Genitori. In total, 300 TV and platform productions were considered for the award.
Viola come il mare received several awards at Piper Fiction Fest by Spettacolo Italiano: Best Fiction on Social Media, Best location and photography, Best couple in fiction (Viola and Francesco), Best fiction voted by the audience and Best supporting actress (Simona Cavallari).
Viola come il mare received Premio Kineo 2023 for the best Italian series at the ceremony held during the 80th Venice International Film Festival. Francesca Chillemi was awarded as the best actress in an Italian series for her role of Viola Vitale.
Following the excellent success of the first season, the series was renewed for a second season. Francesca Chillemi announced the start of filming for season 2 during an interview at Filming Italy Sardegna Festival. She confirmed the start of filming in Rome in July 2023, and in Palermo at the end of September or the beginning of October 2023.
The changes in the season 2 will include a new public prosecutor for Demir and a new boss and colleagues at Sicilia Web News for Viola.
