About Movie:

  • This film is based on the 2000 novel “Blonde” by Joyce Carol Oates, which is a fictionalized account inspired by the life and career of American actress Marilyn Monroe, not an actual biography.
  • In August 2016, it was announced that Netflix would distribute the film. Principal photography began in Los Angeles on August 4, 2019. Filming had to be interrupted in early 2020 following the shutdowns as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was later finished in July 2021.
  • Blonde premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 8, 2022, where it received a 14-minute standing ovation.
  • The film began a limited theatrical release in the United States on September 16, 2022, before its streaming release on September 28, 2022, by Netflix. It is the first NC-17-rated film to be released exclusively to a streaming service.
  • The film received polarized reviews from critics and audiences; while de Armas’s performance garnered critical acclaim, Dominik’s graphic depiction of Monroe’s life was criticized as exploitative and unethical.
  • Ana de Armas received nominations for the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, and SAG Award for Best Actress. The film also received eight nominations at the 43rd Golden Raspberry Awards, winning Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay.
  • Ana de Armas is the second actress to receive an Academy Award nomination for playing Marilyn Monroe, after Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn (2011).
  • This is the fourth biographical film to win the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture, after Mommie Dearest (1981), Inchon (1981), and Diana (2021). This is also the second consecutive Netflix film to win the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture, after Diana (2021).
