Storyline:
Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit, Orphan. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. Orphan: First Kill is an American psychological horror film directed by William Brent Bell, and written by David Coggeshall,. It is a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan. It stars Isabelle Fuhrman, Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, Hiro Kanagawa, and Matthew Finlan.
The film is a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan, based on a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Alex Mace.
In February 2020, the project was announced under the working title Esther. In November 2020, the film’s official title was announced as Orphan: First Kill, with Isabelle Fuhrman reprising her role as Esther. Fuhrman is the only cast member from the original movie to return.
Principal photography of the film began in November 2020 in Winnipeg, Canada, and wrapped on December 11, of the same year.
Orphan: First Kill premiered first in other territories starting in the Philippines on July 27, 2022. The film was released simultaneously through limited theatrical release, video on demand, and on Paramount+, on August 19, 2022.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the film’s twists, practical effects (in regard to de-aging Fuhrman without CGI) and Fuhrman’s performance, but criticized its story and inconsistencies.
Orphan: First Kill grossed $5.4 million in the United States and Canada, and $38.6 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $44 million.
