About Ponniyin Selvan: II Movie:

Ponniyin Selvan: II is a Tamil epic historical action drama film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. The film is produced by Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

Ponniyin Selvan: II (PS-2 / Ponniyin Selvan 2) is the second of two cinematic parts based on the 1954 novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy, it serves as a direct sequel to Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022).

Ponniyin Selvan: II was initially intended to be a single film but was split into two parts that were produced concurrently. Joint principal photography for both parts began in December 2019, halting twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and ultimately wrapping up on 16 September 2021.

As per director Mani Ratnam’s advice, several actors from the film including Vikram, Jayam Ravi, and Karthi grew their hair long for their roles in the film.

The story thread of Ponniyin Selvan spans years and more than 50 characters, with 15 principal roles.

Trisha trained in horseriding at the Madras School of Equitation for this film, where she was enrolled for a special course on 26 October 2020, and completed on 14 November 2020.

Ponniyin Selvan was originally planned as a single film with a budget of ₹500 crore. Later, it was split into two parts that were to be shot back-to-back, with some sources reporting that a budget of ₹500 crore is spread across two parts.

It was reported that Karthi faced an accident while he was shooting in Hyderabad, where he was thrown up in the air, while riding a horse, however, he faced only minor injuries.

Vikram has dubbed for himself for five languages for the film, in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, but only in the trailer. Both Jayam Ravi and Karthi dubbed for the Tamil and the Telugu versions of the film.

The film’s narration was voiced by Kamal Haasan (both trailer and film), Anil Kapoor (trailer)/Ajay Devgn (film), Rana Daggubati (trailer)/Chiranjeevi (film), Prithviraj Sukumaran (trailer)/Mammootty (film) and Jayanth Kaikini (trailer)/Upendra (film) in the Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages respectively.

In September 2021, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) filed a lawsuit against Mani Ratnam in connection with the death of a horse allegedly during the film’s shooting in Hyderabad in August 2021.

Ponniyin Selvan: II was released in theatres worldwide on 28 April 2023 in standard, IMAX, 4DX, and EPIQ formats where it received positive reviews from critics.

The distribution rights of the film in Tamil Nadu were acquired by Red Giant Movies. The Andhra Pradesh and Telangana distribution rights were bought by Dil Raju’s Sri Venkateswara Creations. The Kerala distribution rights were bought by Gokulam Gopalan’s Sree Gokulam Movies. The North India distribution rights were acquired by Pen India Limited. Lyca Productions acquired the overseas distribution rights.

The digital streaming rights for the film were purchased by Amazon Prime Video for ₹125 crore (US$16 million) and started streaming on the platform from 2 June 2023 in Tamil and dubbed versions of Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages. The Hindi dubbed version was premiered from 23 June 2023. The satellite rights of the film was sold to Sun TV.
