- In November 2020, director Gunasekher announced the film based on Kalidasa’s 4th-century play Shakuntala which tells the story of the legendary princess Shakuntala and king Dushyanta.
- In December 2020, actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu was confirmed to be cast as the lead actress to portray Shakuntala.
- The project was announced in October 2020 by Gunasekhar. Principal photography of Shaakuntalam was kickstarted on 15 March 2021 at Annapurna Studios.

- Shaakuntalam was theatrically released on April 14, 2023, by AA Films. Along with Telugu, the film was also released in dubbed versions of Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam languages.
- Shaakuntalam received negative reviews from critics and was a box office failure.
- The UK release was cut, the distributor chose to make cuts to scenes of strong violence in order to obtain a 12A classification. An uncut 15 classification was available.
- The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 11, 2023.
