Storyline:

During the last desperate days of WWII, a solitary prospector (Jorma Tommila) crosses paths with Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover that they have just tangled with no ordinary miner. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word “sisu”, this legendary ex-commando will embody what sisu means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And no matter what the Nazis throw at him, the one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back – even if it means killing every last Nazi in his path.—Lionsgate

About Sisu Movie:

Sisu is a Finnish historical action thriller film, with considerable influences from the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone, which was written and directed by Jalmari Helander. The film stars Jorma Tommila, Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo and Onni Tommila.

“Sisu” is a Finnish word described as stoic determination, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness.

The exteriors are shot in Finnish Lapland, mainly near the villages of Nuorgam and Kaamanen.

Jalmari Helander was originally going to direct a comedic sci-fi film “Jerry and Ms Universe” in Canada. When it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he quickly wrote Sisu (2022) in the fall of 2021. The film’s budget is around $6 million.

The backdrop of the film is the Lapland War in 1944, which saw fighting between Finland and Nazi Germany. However, the place and the year are the only similarities with real history.

Actor Paul Anderson was originally cast for the role of an SS commander.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired international distribution rights, and Lionsgate acquired the rights in North America.

Sisu grossed $7.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $5.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $13 million.

In March 2023, director Jalmari Helander hinted in an interview of STT at the idea that if the film is successful at the box office in the United States, he could consider making a possible sequel for Sisu.

The film debuted at the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2022. It premiered in Finland on 27 January 2023 and it was released in the United States on 28 April 2023. The film received positive reviews from critics.
