  • “Sisu” is a Finnish word described as stoic determination, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness.
  • The exteriors are shot in Finnish Lapland, mainly near the villages of Nuorgam and Kaamanen.
  • Jalmari Helander was originally going to direct a comedic sci-fi film “Jerry and Ms Universe” in Canada. When it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he quickly wrote Sisu (2022) in the fall of 2021. The film’s budget is around $6 million.
  • The backdrop of the film is the Lapland War in 1944, which saw fighting between Finland and Nazi Germany. However, the place and the year are the only similarities with real history.
  • Actor Paul Anderson was originally cast for the role of an SS commander.
  • Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired international distribution rights, and Lionsgate acquired the rights in North America.
  • Sisu grossed $7.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $5.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $13 million.
  • In March 2023, director Jalmari Helander hinted in an interview of STT at the idea that if the film is successful at the box office in the United States, he could consider making a possible sequel for Sisu.
  • The film debuted at the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2022. It premiered in Finland on 27 January 2023 and it was released in the United States on 28 April 2023. The film received positive reviews from critics.
