About Raayan Movie:

Raayan is a Tamil action thriller film written and directed by Dhanush. This project serves as Dhanush’s second directorial venture. Produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the film stars Dhanush in the lead role along with Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, S. J. Suryah, Selvaraghavan, and Prakash Raj.

The film was officially announced in January 2023 under the tentative title D50, as it is Dhanush’s 50th film as the lead actor, and the official title Raayan was announced on 19 February 2024.

Filming for the movie began on July 5, 2023, at East Coast Road in Chennai. The shooting schedule concluded by mid-December 2023.

Vishnu Vishal was initially approached to play an important role in the film. However, due to his schedule conflicts, including his film with director Ram Kumar and Lal Salaam (2024), he could not be a part of it.

The music and background score for the film are composed by A. R. Rahman, marking his fourth collaboration with Dhanush. Their previous collaborations include the films Raanjhanaa (2013), Maryan (2013), and Atrangi Re (2021).

The film received an A certificate from the CBFC, being the first film of Dhanush to receive so after Vada Chennai (2018).

Raayan was released theatrically on July 26, 2024. Apart from the original Tamil language, dubbed versions in the Telugu and Hindi languages are also scheduled to be released. The release date was initially scheduled to release on 11 April but was postponed to May, due to general elections, which was followed by it postponing again to June due to unspecified reasons.

Raayan received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Dhanush’s performance, direction, and screenplay, and Rahman’s score, while the storyline and the writing in the post-interval portions received criticism.

Raayan grossed ₹12 crore (US$1.4 million)–₹12.5 crore (US$1.5 million) worldwide on its opening day, making it the second-highest first-day gross for a Tamil film in 2024, behind Indian 2. The film surpassed Karnan (2021) to achieve the biggest opening for a Dhanush film.

It was announced that the story for the sequel was currently in progress.
