Storyline:

12-year-old Dre Parker has moved to China, and finds himself like a fish out of water. He befriends a fellow classmate, Mei Ying, only to make a rival, Cheng, who starts to bully and attack Dre. Soon, Mr Han, the maintenance man of Dre’s apartment, fends off Cheng and his friends when they are attacking Dre and signs Dre up to fight in the Kung Fu tournament in return for the bullies laying off of Dre. Dre realizes Mr. Han is much more than a maintenance man, when he’s revealed as a master of Kung Fu and Dre soon learns that Kung Fu is about self defense and peace, instead of violence and bloodshed.

About Movie:

The Karate Kid is an American-Chinese martial arts drama directed by Harald Zwart and produced by Jerry Weintraub, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter, and Ken Stovitz. Written by Christopher Murphey, it is based on a story by Robert Mark Kamen, the creator of the original Karate Kid films.

Serving as the fifth film in the franchise, it stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, with supporting performances by Taraji P. Henson, Wenwen Han, Zhenwei Wang, and others.

Originally conceived as a loose remake of the 1984 The Karate Kid, the 2010 film shifts the setting to China and changes the martial art from karate to kung fu, despite the title. In 2024, a new sequel was announced for a 2025 release, with Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles, officially linking this film to the broader Karate Kid universe.

Principal photography of the film, which is an international co-production between China, Hong Kong and the United States, took place in Beijing, China, and filming began in July 2009 and ended on October 16. James Horner composed and conducted the film’s score.

Producer Will Smith said Jackie Chan was held in such high regard in China that he was able to use his status to help with many aspects of the production, such as getting permission to shoot in certain locations for filming.

Produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Overbrook Entertainment, JW Productions, and China Film Group, The Karate Kid was released theatrically worldwide on June 11, 2010, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film earned $359 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, making it the highest-grossing film of the series.
