About The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Movie:

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a fantasy action adventure film, based on 1954’s The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume of the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. It was directed by Peter Jackson from a screenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Jackson

The film is the first installment in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, Ian Holm, and Andy Serkis.

The film was primarily shot in New Zealand, taking advantage of the country’s diverse and stunning landscapes to represent Middle-earth. Iconic scenes were filmed at real-world locations.

During filming, many members of the Fellowship, including Viggo Mortensen, took up surfing in New Zealand. Mortensen had a severe surfing accident that bruised one side of his face. To cover the bruising, make-up artists tried to conceal it but were unsuccessful. Instead, director Peter Jackson decided to film Mortensen from only one side during the Mines of Moria scene, which is why Aragorn is seen from just one side in that part of the film.

When the trailer was released on the internet, on April 7, 2001, it was downloaded 1.6 million times in the first twenty-four hours.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring premiered on December 10, 2001, at the Odeon Leicester Square in London and was then released on December 19 in the United States and on December 20 in New Zealand.

The film was acclaimed by critics and fans alike, being considered a landmark in filmmaking and a significant achievement in the fantasy film genre. It received praise for its visual effects, performances, Jackson’s direction, screenplay, musical score, and faithfulness to the source material.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship grossed over $868 million worldwide during its original theatrical run, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2001 and the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release.

The only film of the trilogy not to be the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide. It was beaten by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001).

It was widely recognized as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. The film received numerous accolades; at the 74th Academy Awards, it was nominated for thirteen awards, including Best Picture, winning for Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects.

In 2007, the American Film Institute named it one of the 100 greatest American films in history, making it the most recent film and the only 21st-century release on the list. In 2021, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The Lord of the Rings trilogy only trilogy to have all three movies nominated for the top 100 greatest films of all time by the American Film Institute.

Two sequels, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, followed in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
